Several of the members of this community have delved into the overclocking world with the help of an nForce2 motherboard and AMD's XP1700 Thoroughbred JIUHB DLT3C/DUT3C stepped CPU.  The chips with these steppings have been shown to overclock to sky-high levels but alas, they are now totally unavailable if you want to buy one - nobody has any stock of them and AMD stopped producing them.  (should I mention that I still have one in my spare parts box?  I was worried I may melt the first one, but all is still well on my overclocked rig :)).  So if you wanted to upgrade and possibly tweak a wee bit more speed out of your system then what would you go for today?  There are two answers:

XP1800 266FSB THOROUGHBRED AIWGA - £45.47
These little beauts are the current equivalent of the XP1700 JIUHBs.  They overclock really nice and are still cheap as chips, literally.  You can buy a decent stepping of this Thoroughbred chip here.

XP2500 333FSB BARTON AQXEA - £70.02
The alternative is to step up to a Barton that gives better data-handling speed by default and still overclocks to scary levels.  The AQXEA stepping of this CPU has been reported as overclocking really well and whilst it is not a direct replacement for the amazing XP1700 JIUHB, it does its job very well for a fraction of the price of the flagship CPUs.  You can get it here.  There is also a review of this stepping here.

Both the above chips overclock to beyond speeds of AMD's current range-topper and very close to the speed of Intel's current flagship.  That makes them a great upgrade at a great price.  People like CPUcity will guarantee the stepping of the CPU that you buy and IMO this is the way forward - you pay for what you want and get what you ordered.

If the XP1800 sounds up your street then buy it NOW as everyone who was buying the XP1700 JIUHB can't get them 1700 any more and now they are starting to buy up the 1800 in bulk.  Stocks of the AQXEA 2500 Barton should be around a little longer, but get them now whilst stocks are there as steppings can and do change and prices do not appear to have much potential for decreasing that much more in the very short term.

Hope the info is of help to some peeps.....

Aye, I got one of those babies a couple of weeks back and it is in my work machien now - it folds *much* faster now :D

I owuldn't worry about your temps atm as long as they are under 60.  This chip can go up to circa 80 if my memory serves.  Let me go check.

85 degrees is the official maximum.

btw, cpucity has sold out of AQXEA and for a week has offered the AQZEA as an alternative, but they have sold out of that too!

/me waits to see which of the steppings they get next!

CPU city
Ive had it a few weeks now.
Round about the time you posted about it.
But was reluctant to make the jump to light speed.

Welcome to the world of warp speed Slowhand :D  It boots a wee bit quicker now, doesn't it!

I take it you have some a appropriately fast RAM to go with your new and faster CPU?  Would you mind posting up your chosen RAM (and speed) along with the FSB & mul;tiplier you used (just for the record).

Cheers!
