/agree, but yes, it's commonly done on that kind of dog, much like docking of tails. Someone, at some point in time, decided it looked more aesthetically pleasing when the ears where constantly pointed like that, so they operate to make them so. I believe some breeds have perked ears naturally (German Shepherds?). If one is bred for showing and lacks the 'normal' ears people will operate to make it a viable showdog. Some might do it regardelss just to make it look 'nicer'. Doesn't make it any less barbaric though.

Docking tails is much the same, except of course it never occurs naturally. Common in Dobermans etc. Personally I think it's equally as barbaric except when there is good reason. I can't see any good reason for the ear surgery, but the tail docking is valid in working hunting dogs like Spaniels, where it is done becuase otherwise, with their long tail 'feathers' they'd rip their tails to shreds on undergrowth when going to get shot birds etc. We used to have a non-working Spaniel (ofc without the docking), and he regularly shredded his tail (and back legs when he got brambles stuck in said feathers and then ran around with the bramble whipping the backs of his legs) when we went up onto the carn and he went rummanging in the undergrowth. The local gamekeeper's Spaniels were all docked and used to go into the same kind of territory without any problem on a regular basis. I believe ear surgery is illegal in the UK now (though of course it probably still gets done illegally), and tail docking is illegal unless you can prove the dog is going to be used in a situation where it would be better to have the tail docked. I'm not sure how you go about proving that though.
