Britain is still quite good at this sort of thing. The engineering department in my uni (Swansea) is currently designing and building a car for the land speed record to beat the current speed record they helped to set.

I like seeing these sorts of thing. Steam should be very easy technology wise to make the just to alternative fuels with. Electric motors to start, with steam hybrid. Steam could be used for turbines to recharge batteries too. Meaning that virtually anything could be burned to heat the water. One thing that would be nice to burn is Glycerine as that is an easy to make from animal fats and vegetable oils, and is actually a waste product from the production of biodiesel.

So you can drive a regular car on biodiesel, and the waste product from that green fuel production could power another car. I make biodiesel, and at the moment people are giving glycerine away, putting down drains or paying to have it removed. There's a good market for this.
Juggling Hard Disks over concrete floors ends in tears 5% of the time.

Can't they design something fart powered?
I'd be quids in then!
