I have been having problems with folding since I got my new rig. CPU-folding runs quite hot in the suitcase, so try and stick to GPU-folding. Thing is, since getting the new PC, it has been lagging my PC badly when folding. Even browsing, using Word, anything really. It lags a bit too much to ignore. I have tried, but it is too annoying.

The best answer I have found so far is getting Win7. I will that sooner or later but until then... any ideas?

Jabbs

What GPU card do you have?
Start Folding and get yourself one of those nice new badge thingies, it\'s a good cause.  Check out the stats

I fold with 8800GTS and it also laggs when doing something, playing is out of the question when folding is on. So just pause it while doing anything important and when leaving the pc just unpause it :)

It is not gaming, it is just browsing. For example scrolling this forum is like 1-5fps. Starting Total Commander takes 30 seconds - on an SSD-disk! - when that is running :g:

I said doing something  = browsing and just doing normal stuff.
It slows down a lot but hard to measure how much.

Sorry, I misread that :)

Yeah I do that, but tend to forget to turn it back on

Penfold

Mine does that. Things like Eudora and outlook really slow down when it's folding for me.

DuVeL

Got an 8800GT-OC2 (BFG) here.
It sometimes does that but no problems at all but that might be due to my XPC-program.
Maybe get a program on like Speedfan that can control your heat?

It worked with a computers at work untill they discoverd it was Folding that was maxing out things...

Just more confirmation really ....

My EVGA 8800GT (that died recently) would slow my TV viewing (tuner card) and video games (well, that's just LFS).  Some size work units seemed to bog things down more than others.  Wasn't so bad on non-graphics apps though - not noticeable really).

My solution was a BFG GTX 275 OC .... but that may not be for everyone :norty: Folds 3X as fast and I can fold fine watching TV or playing LFS .....

But seriously, the 8800GT is getting to be old technology and gpu price wars have gotten the card prices pretty low, so it might be worth considering an "upgrade" ......

The GTS 240 on my son's pc folds at 5500 ppd - somewhat faster than the 8800GT).  The 240's are not readily available now - discon't for some reason) but the GTS 250 can be found for as little as $85 - $120).  It should be considerably faster than the 8800GT at folding and everything else, and very likely not cause things to bog down while folding.

Have you heard that Win7 will improve this condition?

Otherwise, don't know what else you could try :sideways:

After reading about the problem quite a bit, it seems to be very common on the 8800GT, amongst other cards. I will get a new card in 2010, but it has to last until then...

I have read that Win7 (and Vista) are less prone to this problem with lagging OS interface. I can't recall details but it has something to do with how the OS uses the GPU in regular routines which clash with the GPU. With the newer OS this is not the case.

I do 4500-5500 with this GPU (if left on 24/7)... 3x as fast... I am tempted but, I will stand firm and wait for next year :D
