Have any of you guys gone out and had a CPU and cooler lapped and polished?

What are the true benefits of doing so? Also, how much does something like this cost?

Thanks in advance..

I did mine myself of a block of glass and my own grades of sandpaper.  Benefits are usually a minor improvement in the colling effectiveness of the block.  For most normal systems it is not worth doing but when you want to squeeze out those last few degrees of cooling for your OC'd beastie then it is worth it.

looking at a clip from frozen cpu.. seems like a lot of work

It is a lot of work and tbh most decent blocks come properly finished anyway, certainly good enough these days for the likes of me.  The lapping started mainly when cooling blocks were delivered in an appalling condition and 'not flat'.  These days lapping is hardly ever needed imo.
