I desperately need to upgrade; this PC was built by Norm in 2005 and it has been a great rig, and pretty much future proof. there's only been a problem with recent games, and bbc2, arma2 and avp have convinced me to make the leap.
Rather than get confuddled by a welter of opinions, I asked Kreg.
his recommendation was:

• Intel Core i5 750 2.66Ghz (Lynnfield) (Socket LGA1156)

• Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD2 Intel P55 (Socket 1156) DDR3 microATX Motherboard

• Patrtiot G Series Sector 5 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Dual Channel (PGV34G1333ELK)
• Corsair TX 650W ATX SLi Compliant Power Supply (CMPSU-650TXUK)

• Powercolor ATI Radeon HD 5850 "Dirt2 Edition" 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

Blunt if you can afford it, you should go for 3 memory sticks instead of 2.

The reason being DDR3 runs faster when it's in a triple data rate configuration

The i5 is based on Lynnfield chips which is dual channel only..
Blunt was under a budget, so a i7 bloomfield based chip was out of the question, without severely cutting back on something else..

i had a i7 965 before i got robbed, and now im playing around on the missus pc when im home which is pretty similar to blunts, and honestly the lower memory transfer speeds isnt something you notice that much, on the contrary the dual channel solution gives you better latency on the memory is most cases..
for his budget hes got a brilliant rig, it could have been done a few bucks cheaper, but its good quality bits

ill let blunt decide if the budget should be made public, but as most can see, the graphics card took atleast 1/3 of the total cost

i've got the i5 750 2.66 running @ 4ghz with 4gb of dual channel memory in a
gigabite GA-P55M-UD3A and more than happy with the performance m8 :thumbsup2:
