Have you tried putting them on diff channels?

Issue:
ATAPI  incompatible  press F1 to resume.

Cause:
This issue can be caused by any off the following possibilities:

Cable loose or not connected.
CMOS values not properly set.

Solutions:

CABLE LOOSE OR NOT CONNECTED
If any hardware has been recently added or the computer has been recently moved it is possible that the IDE or power cables connected to the hard disk drive or the CD-ROM drive may have become loose or disconnected.

Verify that the hard disk drive as well as the CD-ROM, CD-R or CD-RW drive have at least two or more cables connected to them. Once cable should be a gray flat cable (data / IDE/EIDE cable) and the other should be the power cable. In addition the gray flat cable should be connected to the motherboard or the interface card on your computer.

If the cables appear to be connected properly, disconnect the data and power cables and then reconnect them to insure that they are not loose.

CMOS VALUES NOT PROPERLY SET
If all IDE/EIDE/ATAPI cables have been checked or disconnected and reconnected as instructed above and you continue to experience the same issue it is possible that the IDE/EIDE/ATAPI device may not be setup properly in CMOS.

Verify that if your hard disk drive or CD-ROM drives are IDE/EIDE/ATAPI that they are setup in CMOS and setup properly to their configurations. If the hard drive or drives are setup as Auto values do not need to be checked.

Or your drive could have died....

Or you may need to replace your CMOS battery......

Try BB's suggestion first, make sure drive set to master/slave as appropriate as not all motherboards can cable select properly.

reason I say this is that some drives have issues working with some other drives (even from the same manufacturer)

sheepy

well ive put it on slave now.

turning off pc and trying it.

What I mean is that there are 2 EIDE channels that can each support 2 devices - you can have a master and a slave on each channel. Sometimes, hard disks don't like working on the same channel as a another hard disk. If that is case then you can set them both as master but put them on different channels (different ribbon cables rather than the same cable)

Oh, and do as TL suggested, and set all drives to "autodetect" in your BIOS

sheepy

dammit!!!!!

put the jumpers on the correct places

didnt work

went in to CMOS put it on auto, it detected and i was happy

then again

ATAPI not compatable

any ideas,
i really hope that this damn wazzok mobo will accept it.

what is your motherboard and what is your new hard disk?

Is it an old motherboard? it might have issues with large hard disks.
