I have been using the Villain Crew's SuperHero ROM for a while now. Even VillainROM 10.3, just out and quite awesome, could not lure me away. SuperHero is the speed of vanilla and Sense apps for the bits you want, thus faster than SenseUI ROMs.

Combine that with JIT. JIT is a new Dalvik compiler, meant to arrive with 2.2, which has been adapted for custom ROMs. It is not 100% stable for sure, that will come in time, but I have very few issues (a random reboot a week or so). It just about doubles the MIPS on the Hero (!) almost closing the gap up to faster and newer phones without JIT.

Then add a custom kernel as well (ben22 in my case) and clock the phone from 384-528MHz variable speed (load dependent) to a solid 710MHz (790 might even be worth trying) 100% of the time when the screen is on + clock the Hero lower than regular 384-528MHz when not on (fixed on 245MHz in my case, to keep it waking up fast enough).

Add to that LauncherPro Beta as a replacement for vanilla or ADW-launcher. I have tried just about every launcher there is, and despite the lack of features still (many coming, and fast) it is just so much faster. It is noticeable. Adjust the launcher for instant instead of all that smooth stuff.

The combined result is a 100% smooth Hero! SuperHero is coming out in a new release soon, based on the now leaked final 2.1 for Hero, which should sort the remainder of the bugs (except for the JIT ones, but that depends on 2.2 I think?).

Remember to nandroid, but otherwise give it a go :)
