Halo plays crud on my pc, 12 fps. im really peed off my pc doesnt seem to be playing games as well as it used to.

Even with the lowest settings.

any ideas?

yes latest drivers, blah blah

DarkAngel

Odd i usually get about 34 fps, what graphic card you got and is it up to date?

Bennie

FX, i do get 30/40 but when theres like 6 aliens runnning about it goes to 14 or so :(, year i got the latest driver it did improve the game a little

Dr Sadako

Halo is a directX 9 game and we all know how GeForce cards "handles" DX9. From our latest LAN we saw that Halo ran best on a GF card if the Nvidia driver was at least 5x.xx.

Well worded Mr. Sadako. I run a modest GF 3 card and with the 5x.xx drivers Halo runs as sweet as a nut. My only concession to the frame rate god is that I have shadows set to blobby. So latest drivers blah blah  was spot on  :)

Whatever's gone wrong it's not my fault.

Give it an enema! Defrag it, but first set your virtual memory to 'no paging file'. After it's defragged, do it again! Windows defragger doesn't do that good a job. When you've done that reset the paging file to 'windows managed' Empty out the windows 'temp' folder. In general, give it a good springclean. Check you have the 'best' drivers. Imo the latest drivers aren't always the best.
Oh, and use Regheal to clean all the crap out of the registry.

good advice, but don't get into the habit of defragging your HDD every week as it's a HDD killer.

hard disk drive.

defrag run too often will destroy hard drives.

at most, it should be run every 3 months.

:o destroy as in?...

i actually do defrag allot... like 3/4 times a week  :o

could that be the problem??

Or a new driver, because i used to be able to play BF1942 and UT 2003 really smoove now there both unplayable

Gandalf

Hard drives are mechanical devices. They have a finite lifespan. Every time you defrag the drive you are making the disk work non stop until the defrag has finished. On a large HDD this can be a while. Such use will eventually wear out the drive, and it'll happen a lot faster than if it was just used normally.

I used to run defrag all the time on my first PC and the poor HDD died after about 14 months of use. Lost everything. After that I found out that it's best not to run defrag that often as a: you don't need to, and b: it'll eventually kill the drive.

If you have Win2k / XP then you can analyse the drive with the defrag tool and this'll tell you if it's needed. Or if you're running a Win9x install then the defrag tool should report automatically. (can't quite remember on that one, been a while since I've run any Win9x machines)

Here is a useful, if dated, article on the subject.

The new nvidia drivers although are superb for halo suck on BF1942 it caused problems for Albert, madness and my machine at the weekend so we had to role back to the last drivers we had.
