New Rig

Building a Rig for a mate came up with this.

Intel Core i7 930 D0 SLBKP Bloomfield 45nm, 2.8 GHz, QPI 4.8GT/s, 8MB Cache, 20x Ratio, 130W

Asus P6X58D-E, Intel X58, S1366, PCI-E 2.0 (x16), DDR3 2000 (OC), SATA 6Gb/s, SATA RAID, ATX

1536MB EVGA GTX 480 SC, 40nm, 3800MHz GDDR5, GPU 726MHz, Shader 1451MHz, 480 Cores, DL DVI/m HDMI

6GB(3x2GB) Corsair DominatorGT, DDR3 PC3-16000(2000), CAS 8-9-8-24, DHX, XMP, DF II, Connector,1.65V

850W Corsair CMPSU-850HXUK, ATX, EPS12V, Modular,

Any ideas if I should change anything the GFX is always going to be a discussion point so your 2cents would be great.

You can get the ATI 5870 for less then Ã,£300 now so I  dont think the GTX480 is worth the extra. If you are going to get the 480 make sure the case has very good air flow and lots of fans as they are a tad hot, also get a set of ear plugs as they are very noisey. Personally I would get 2X ATI 5850 in crossfire.

If you can find a i7 920 I would go for that, they are cheaper and both will overclock to the same levels even though the 930 starts off 140 mhz higher.

But wouldn't 2 ATI 5850 be more noisey and hotter than the one GX480.

Probably not much in it,  if you got the vapor x models then no the 5850s would be quieter and cooler,  but 2x 5850 would be faster, depends on your budget really and the resolution you're gonna be running at.

It gonna be running 1680 x 1050 atm, but want it to last for a little while

5870 is plenty then, I have one and can recommend them.I have BC2 at maximum settings at 1920X1200 and still get 60fps.

try PC specilist b4 u look at building it yourself m8, my current rig worked out more expensive to make it myself than to get them to make it

I'd try to get an SSD in there if the budget allows, they make a big difference.

Failing that, get more drives and RAID 'em.

Interesting - what sort of operations do SSD enhance most noticeably? I'm sure the last review I read suggested they were more or less on a par with ordinary drives, not enough to be worth the premium?

Well , anything that reads from your hard disk really. I've got a 256 Gb one and my PC boots in about 15-20 seconds, games load really quick as do the levels within them. Luckily I got mine just before they underwent a massive price increase (saved Ã,£200).

Out of the two SSDs I know of fitted in machines both have failed. I'm not sure if that's bad luck or they're not that stable yet, I'm not sure...but seem quite expensive and I'd want it to last.
