Since there is no real social structure in game the friends list is all we have if you don't have TS3 running constantly.

If people didn't know the two way of adding people works differently. The Real ID eg. the email address of the account, shows you the players real name and more info about him/her and also works with other Blizzard games like WoW. But the character code and name only reveals the char name, so in a way it is more secure against people you don't know.
