Canon EOS 20D

I know this is old tech, but I finally managed to replace my Olympus C5060 with a Canon EOS 20D.  It was my father's and he upgraded to a Canon 5D Mk II - I did try to persuade him that the 20D was a better camera as it had bigger numbers, but he insisted on keeping it and giving me the 20D on long-term 'loan'.  Couple of nice lenses with it too.   Play time!

Tugs has just upgraded to a 7D too, it must be upgrade month!

I got the standard kit EFS 18-55mm lens and a very nice (if a little heavy - metal-bodied) Tokina AT-X 24-200 which will give me 320 at the top end once the 1.6 multiplier is taken into account.

Both very good lenses, your lucky your father has some awesome gear. The 24-200mm gives you a lot of flexibility and will be awesome for portraits around 50-70mm with the 1.6 crop factor. The standard Kit lenses are always actually pretty damn good as 90% of the time they will be sold with the camera.
Hopefully you have a steady hand on the long end for the Tokina (or a tripod).

He's been into photography his whole life.  He spent 42 years working for Kodak and was (and still is) a Photographic Competition Judge for most of that time and still judges competitions around the UK (including some International comps).

...and yes, I plan to bring the camera to the LAN for some piccies.

We'll have to have a camera nerd corner. I have to go shoot semi naked women...... again! ..... on the Friday so I'll have some of my gear there as well.

Thats truly awesome. I am a complete GEEK and would love to have a conversation about the maths behind lenses, photons and CCD's and other geeky thing like Bayer arrays VS Prism 3 CCD cameras. Can't you bring him to the LAN too? =)

A camera nerd corner would be awesome, can you also bring the semi naked ladies to balance the neerdyness out =)! It looks like there will be good coverage of events at the LAN this year from all of the SLR's present. Hopefully there will be a wide array of fast lenses on offer too for the low light.
Its a shame I am Canon and not Nikkon, as I would love to see the difference between my "cheap" gear and "Pro" gear. The main thing for me is to see the different in the amount of light let into the Sensor from having an APS rather than APS-C. I have been told its as much as 2 stops more. I really want to get my hand on a Medium format Camera *Drools* as they are seriously expensive but very sexy! You don't happen to have one do you Smilo?

I am really looking forward to the LAN for so many different reasons!

Awesome mate. Defo a good choice with that combination as an inexpensive "all rounder".

Heh.. my little collection fades in comparison.
Bought the camera when I was sorta considering photo for a hobby, so didn't splash all out on that one. Still works great though, the old 400d.
Couple of tripods, a cheap Tamron 70-300 macro, flash, wire trigger... but the biggest value for money on it so far has actually been the Cokin square filter system I smacked on the front of the standard 18-55. ND grad filters really make landscapes pop. Combine that with a circ.polarizer, and you're off to some fun shooting

Need to get something with more light sensitivity, automatic bracketing and the option for disabling hot spot detection though. Nightshooting is a nightmare when you do a 10 minute exposure, then gotta wait for another ten minutes while the camera figures out if some pixels are burnt out. For every single shot. Aaagh!

That hotspot thing sounds a bit of a pain, maybe you can turn it off and if you do get a problem correct them in software? Polarisers are possibly the greatest but underrated bits of kit. I love mine for sorting out blue sky, shooting through glass, fixing reflections and even sorting out pics of people in glasses amongst many other things.

That's the problem Smilodon. This was a new feature on the 400 I think. A massive pain. In the 450, you have the option to disable it, but I've not found that in the 400 yet. Maybe if I update the firmware. I'll check that out later today.
