I can't see myself playing Fps games on PC as I'll never be able to play them with mouse and keyboard. That's fine though. I'll probably stick to console for racing games too. So what I have decided is to try some strategy games on PC. I've never really played them nor have any idea what is good in this genre. Any recommendations? Preferably with a competitive multiplayer but noob friendly. Possibly prefer the idea of turn based but will try real time too.

Starcraft 2 is pretty fun. It's easy to get to know the game but to actually be good at it is the hardest part :p. The thing is, either being good or bad at it Blizzard will always put you in a league where your win/loss ratio is about 50/50. What's also fun is when you know the game & start watching streams/vods, it's really entertaining to watch the best of the best (mostly koreans) battle it out. Games of top pro players can be as entertaining to watch as a good football game imo ^^ (//www.teamliquid.net is the biggest community site for SC2). Should maybe try a trial version, I think there is one where you can play for 20 hours.

Beside sc2, the only recent rts I know of is Anno 2070, which looks fun but haven't tried it yet.

The Age of Empires series was a good set of games.

Not turn-based but also not ridiculously frenetic.

If your into military stuff then you could try Company of Hero's which is a great series and was going quite cheap on Steam or give one of the total war games ago like Napoleon, Rome or Shogun total war.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I went with Starcraft 2. It was the bit about the game choosing players of similar ability that sold it to me.

I think age is started to affect my gaming. I don't seem to be able to play the twitchy shooters as much and can tell I'll never get used to mouse and keyboard. Strategy games seem the way forward for me.

I also realised my old Steam account has Frozen Synapse on it. I bought it when on sale ages ago but never played it. There's the turn based option solved.

Have you considered driving sims? Live For Speed is quite popular here.. :D

I love racing games but will stick to the 360 for them. I love the sim racers but very few of them support the 360 controller out of the box. I'm not one for messing around and hacking these things to work. I have no space or desire for.a wheel.

I did try Live For Speed many months ago but couldn't be bothered trying to get the 360 controller working. And I'll only get beat by everyone using wheels anyway. At least on 360 I'm racing other people using a 360 controller (more likely anyway)

Zootoxin

The original 4 dawn of war games. I absolutely love and very cheap now too

If you want something unique, easy to begin playing, but also with a lot of multi player action and some interesting depth, but not overly complex... then check out The Grid.

It was featured on IndieGames.com so you know it's good ;)

Summon wizards, build farms, complete pilgrimages, become a Monk, a Seer over your own religion, chase the #1 Headband, all this while fighting other players constantly and trying to stay alive and make a little gold!

XCOM (enemy unknown and enemy within)

It's turn based strategy, so possibly not what you meant, but reflexes don't come into it at all -you can go make a coffee while deciding to shoot or not. Great unique game. Very often the first modern one, enemy unknown, is on special on steam for like £5.

Plus the new dlc introduced MECs which can punch the enemy in the face :-D

yeh all of the above is good games but i cant belive no one has mentioned Sid Meier's Civilzation V. It's turn based and a session can last for days :)
Theres a Gold edition on steam now and its well worth it.

Other good turnbased games are the Fallout games and Planescape Torment, those are RPGs tho and they are a bit old but are still fun to play :)
