This guide is short and to the point, following the KISS principle of ‘Keep It Simple, Stupid’. If the lesson is learnt, the results are quite dramatic!

Playing defense on any map can be very static and lead you to repeat the same things each round. For example you may be assigned to guard one particular position on a map time after time and you may even find a good spot to cover it, but if you go to the same spot every time then you will soon find that you are being shot every round or even stabbed from behind! This should teach you something.

Never occupy the same position in consecutive rounds, try and change position every round if possible – apart from anything else it will make it more difficult for the enemy to kill you! Here is a simple example of varying your position on cs_italy. Imagine your goal is to cover the middle ‘short stairs’:

We have marked 12 possible spots where you could position yourself to cover the short stairs. Some require that you have someone covering your back, but all of these locations are possible. If you change position 12 times the CTs will approach more carefully, which in turn means that they will have less time to complete the objective, this in turn gives your team a better chance of completing its objective.

Apply this idea to each map you play and you will become a better player by becoming more unpredictable. This will lead to you gaining the respect of other TCS players for your cunning guile and the more vocal plaudits amongst the community will heap their highest praise upon you and call you a ‘complete git’ for killing them again. High praise indeed ;)
