Hello, a few of you may recognise my from old N42 or WAS days, but I've got a question for you.

Now I've finally updated to 1.6 and got it more or less working, anyone know why I seen to hang on most servers when the login process says it's downloading a security module update, the bar increments, finishes and then all I get is network activity and no precaching resources?

System specs aren't going to be a whole bunch, but it's XPSP1 on an Abit NF7-s with an O/C 2500 barton at 10.5x210, 512 PC3200 and a GF4 ti4200.

Got into a few servers but it's not reliable.

Thanks.

Have a look at this.

I have the same problem every now and then and this sorts it.

OK, gave that a spin. recreated a new blob and tried geting back onto the server after exiting steam, ensuring it ain't runnin' no more and restarting.

Same problem, server times out after loads of packets get sent and none received.
Nothing being dropped by router

I'm still trawling other areas, but you good people got any more ideas?

Hiya, Sadako!

Have you got all the correct ports forwarded to the right machine??

I've got 1200, 27000 to 27015 and 27030 to 27039 all coming to my machine.  Dunno where exactly i got these from, but they work for me.

You probably got it from here JB (or somebody else did and posted the info):

I've got Steam installed, why can't I connect?

BigFatCat

Well, that's a waste of a couple of evenings.

Removed steam, cleared registry, reinstalled to different directory.
All DMW traffic is FWDd to my pc.

Cannot connect to anything, same problem: Downloads security module, starts to load module, then everything stops with mass packets being sent but nothing received.

Not a happy bunny, at all.

Are you able to try this without the router? What router do you have? Is it set to allow traffic on the previously mentioned ports?

Only by hitching up a spare usb adsl modem, which i'd rather not do. What i've done is forward ALL traffic from the DMW IP to my pc so no ports are blocked. It's first in the rule list, so it's not affected by anything else.
It's a Solwise SAR-110 ADSL router that was fine for anything in CS1.5. It makes me think it's something to do with steam and not the networking.
One 1 (yes, one) occasion, connecting to homer got one stage further, with precaching resources then died again.

I'll try another creating another steam account.

Thanks for the help.

Np. Are you running a firewall as well? I would recommend eliminating the router from the problem by bypassing it. It will give you peace of mind if nothing else.

No firewall per se, but all UDP traffic from DMW is allowed through regardless of port which should stop any firewalling being in the way.

Strange I could get on to a french 1.6 server the day before, so something's working, very very infrequently.
Well, if the Mrs is off to Ikea tomorrow, I can spend a little time messing before I go out but I'm not overjoyed with the success so far.

Well I'll wish you luck. Most people on here have had varying problems with steam. Another place to try is the forums on www.steampowered.com

I've seen a couple with similar problems but no resolution.

Cadaver

If it's any help, I had a similar problem when I installed my new router the other day.  I resolved it by opening up the inbound ports on the firewall as per the link in Blueball's post.

However, I didn't restrict it to traffic just from the dMw servers, as I figure Steam's doing some funky security stuff with a central server when you fire a game up.  It works for me, maybe it'll solve your woes.

I tried a few variations of rules, etc and my stateful inspection rule allowed me access to servers without needing any specific ports opening. Which was nice.

And I have since managed to access DMW servers.

"How?" I hear you cry.

I increased UDP timeout on my router to 20 seconds. It was reduced to prevent the router locking up when you refresh a list of CS internet servers. Careful balance required then.

Now, where do I join the queue to die?
