Just spent 2 hours tonight taking the worst offenders to one side and had a 1 to 1 with them to keep language clean. I think common sense rules here before 9 is not acceptable .. after 9 its should be relaxed. As for any chat channels i don't see a reason why anyone should be f-ing and blinding  in them at any time
I know whitey had a run in tonight with a drunk switch. Not a fun thing to deal with and he should know better (when sober)

I think it highlighted to a few people that we are serious about keeping it clean and seemed to take it on-board after I explained some reasons why we have the rule

Thanks JAS,  I tried to talk with Switch but he ended up making me feel like I was in the wrong and an old prude  (which I probably am :g:) .  I also had Riggy whispering me as I was talking to Switch telling me that we're a guild full of adults and that there shouldn't be an issue with swearing.  I also tried to explain the situation to her which she didn't agree with but seemed to accept.  I left the game and TS because I felt really down after it.

From the complaints I had from Switch I think the best thing we can do is be firm and most of all consistent in applying the rules.  I thought that we were but Switch doesn't agree.  I also don't think it's appropriate for Switch to be a raid leader with the number of times he has to be talked to about swearing in Guild chat.  I really was ready to gkick him tonight.

I have to admit that this is a worrying trend I have noticed in some of the channels.  I think a sterner hint of what we expect on in terms of how it should be.  Also behavior in games as well.

Sorry to barge in but I think it is growing issue for the community as a whole.

If an advisory thread is going to appear, please make it community wide.
I haven't had too much trouble in CS, but a reminder across the board wouldn't be a bad idea.

I'm not a guild or game leader or officer so this is just my observation. I was sat in TS for most of the evening and so was listening to the general conversations that were being generated from the swearing and private chats you guys were having. It seemed that alcohol was 70% of the problem as Switch was very drunk last night and Riggy wasn't far behind. A lot of the reasoning was therefore a little less than coherent but the gist was that DMR has no minors in it, there's a language filter in WOW and so people should be free to speak how they want. There was a bit of fighting talk along the lines that if this person is kicked from the guild then that person will leave as well and take others with them. But I do really think it was the wine talking and not a genuine desire to quit by anyone.

That being said I did get the feeling that other more sober people in TS didn't really understand exactly what the rules/guidelines were and what was appropriate language for this channel or that and that a few people logged out when things got a bit heated. I was asked for a response due to me being an Admin but I explained that games in dMw are mostly autonomous and as such I was on the lowest rung being a social member and that Jas and his officers were the ones to discuss this with and not me. I could really only speak about the general community take on the subject and not anything specific to DMR. It might be worth reposting a guide to 'the use of language in the community' as there did seem to be some confusion from some sober guildies about the rules/guidelines that we have in place. Maybe they are newer recruits that aren't familiar with the rules that might already be in place?

Hopefully a few people might be waking up this morning and feeling a bit embarrassed about last night and a bit apologetic about their behavior.

Its a fair point...

My only argument is.... It makes the tone of ts aggressive and has the potential to offend or simply put people off joining. (just like last night).

so

We have moved on from CS where you have a quick chat with your dead team in between rounds. Lets face it 16 people throwing an Fbomb every time they got shot soon got tiresome. With TS now we have long conversations going on while playing our games and bad language is part of many peoples natural vocabulary.

Its almost impossible to police and no fun taking people to one side to remind them....

Perhaps it's because I have a hangover but I don't particularly care if people don't like our no swearing rule. We cater for the majority of the Community and it's always been in place. We get repeated complaints about swearing via PM and we've never made anything but clear that we don't tolerate it.

I don't care if it's WoW where we have no minors. Once the floodgates open then it'll crossforums and cross games.

Frankly abide by the rules or leave.

JAS I understand it's difficult to police but you have to try. Occasionally we all swear (I'm JUST as bad) and we live with that. It's the people that consistently and repeatedly swear that need to be picked up on it. Hell, blame it the Council and say it's our request. I'll happily argue the toss with anyone about it if they like.

If Switch is that bad then, as Whitey says, I'm not sure he should even be a raid leader. However, I don't play WoW so leave that to those of you that do.

Until such time as we officially change our policy the rules stay. Period.

We'll post up a thread about it in general chat and advise everyone what our policy is. If anyone get complaints in game about it then please refer them to us.

And that was the point I think I failed to get across last night.

QuoteThe dMw community is committed to maintain a clean, fair, fun place to play our games. By joining the community you sign up and agree to the this ethos that sets us apart from the majority of online gamers.

dMw may not be the most leet players but we are the best we can be in all areas of our games. This includes communication via in game text or TS.

Regarding bad language we can all do it and mistakes will be made but this should be an exception not the norm on our servers. If people constantly and repeatedly swear then admins will pick up on it and ask you to moderate it. If you cant moderate it then you have to ask "Am i in the right place ?"

I'm sure we have all played on other servers where people trash talk , troll and abuse at every available opportunity our servers are a safe haven from this and its one of many reasons that people come to us and stay with us.

We want everyone to enjoy the games we host as much as possible but with mutual respect for all players. A small effort from you regarding moderate language gives us great gains for the community as a whole

So lets be clear .......

Language

~All players should hold a mature level of conduct at all times so keep your language in the forums, on the servers and when using voice comms in line with this.~

Thats my feelings on it ... i was going to post this in the wow section but if a more generic one is posted ill hold off

What do you class as constantly and repeatedly?  One person may think it's ok once every other sentence,  others might think doing it more than once or twice an hour/day/week may be seen as OK.   I think we need to be clearer and my preference would be to take the dMw stance of no  swearing and if someone happens to let one out we remind them of the rule.

smilodon

It would be simpler that way. I know the response from the dissenters though. We're adults and shouldn't be ticked off like naughty school children every time we use strong language. It's embarrassing to be publicly scolded in TS or guild chat. There are no children in WOW TS channels, or shouldn't be and so it's much like sitting with friends in a pub, especially when we've been drinking (Friday, Saturday) so where's the harm? I can kind of see the argument that occasional language shouldn't be an issue but which every way you cut it lasts nights tirade of swearing in guild chat and then on TS was unacceptable.

Wherever the line gets drawn someone is going to be unhappy. it would have been nice to let people use good judgement and common sense but there you go...

Surely it's judgement. If you become draconian you'll upset someone. I like the 9pm watershed, no swearing before if you can help it, and nothing vulgar after, no directing the words 'off fu( you canut' at anyone please. We run an adult gaming community, neither a kindergarten nor a council drug den. Happy medium, if you get asked to tone it down, please do so...

That's what we've been trying to do.  Last night showed me it doesn't work.

Benny

Hmm....in which case, I don't see that you have much choice. Private word with the worst offenders and a post about mutual respect etc and the rules.

I go through phases of being a right sweary git and not, swearing is neither directed at people nor gratuitous from my personal perspective, I simply lack vocabulary in my repertoire.

Good god, you go out for the day and look what happens.   Not read it all yet but will do prior to jumping on to TS, we can talk then.
