What do I need to get Started ?

I was wondering what programs I could use and how it all works, I have pretty much no back ground knowledge. And fancy trying to do some mapping.
Any Links to programs etc or advice would be great.

There are loads of websites out there fella and i,m sure the guys will post more links. You have a lot of reading to catch up on, but there are many tutorials out there.
