Just wondering if anyone uses an in car camera or dash cam.

I noticed that some insurers give discounts if you have one installed so wondered if it was worth it.

Its a big thing to have in Russia, and getting bigger here, i'll have a look on the Alfa forum as there was a discussion about which camera systems to use.

There is also the black box route, but i find that too intrusive

A friend of mine purchased a Go Pro for Skiing. He recently installed it in his car with a car mount.

I'll be installing 2 camera's on my bike when i cycle in London; so i can claim if hit by a muppet driver.

I wouldn't personally like a black box in my car, but its great to bring the cost down for new drivers

Will you start using capitals when you move to the Capital?

Go Pro is the way.

Fatdan has one in his race car for track days, but as hes only just got it and not been on one yet this year he stuck it in his astra for the drive to work in freezing fog and having watched it i can vouch for the quality, very slight fish eye feel to it but hardly noticeable and it really gives an excellent field of view.

I have one as well, and they don't even fall off when you crash I've found ;)

OK having looked into these it's not quite right. It's a bit, umm, extreme probably for what I want.

Nice to have something that shows my snowboarding off a cliff parachuting down into a river then kayaking off into the sunset but it's a tad more than I need lol.

I was kinda thinking something I could have in the car subtley which would record the journeys. I think Hones John has a couple of suggestions.

Thanks

There are a few guys I know who make videos for Advanced driving lessons. The cameras they use seem designed for cars and even record speed and GPS. I'll ask what they use.

Whatever's gone wrong it's not my fault.

Thanks, that would be perfect.

Which bike cameras are you thinking about (or have got) - I was thinking I should do this.

Found some on Amazon:

Video I found of one of them:

Reading on some of the comments, it's better to get one with an external GPS rather than internal, look out for cheap fakes on the market (best to by from a UK based company)

Edit, Just found this on the fakes:

I have ended up buying a Roadhawk RIDE.

With the various adaptors and connectors I can use it across different things - in the car, mountain biking and skiing so it's truly cross platform. It's also easy to swap between the cars.

Looks pretty good, might be a better option than the veho muvi ones I was looking at before, and it's cheaper than the equivalent contour/gopro. The wide angle and HD aspects really appeal!

Did you get it from dogcamsport?

Yup. If you're interested, talk to Ed. He talked me through the entire range. Initially they said that it's not suitable for cars but Ed disagreed and found me a solution for the car that worked well. It can be charged from the cigarette lighter or hardwired and although not as neat as the car cams, it's a £100 cheaper and can be used elsewhere. The battery only last 90 minutes though (meant for a commute) but a very small USB Battery pack will keep it running for 8-9 hours (as will as 32GB SDCard) - this is what he used for skiing.

The only thing I would mention is that it records video back-to-back in 5 minute slots. This is supposed to make finding incidents easier however with a simple free program such as Freemake Video Converter it will stitch them together really easily.

If you're going to get it from DogCamSport then use this code: jmcb10  for a 10% discount. Worked for me.
