Hi all,  I passed my driving test 2 weeks ago Yay! And now would like to buy a car.

Have people got any tips about buying used cars.

Just a run around budget is 1k i was more after tips like things to look out for or to be aware of than recommendations of actual cars

My daughter was advised by my regular garage to buy Japanese.

He said that in his experience they were more reliable.

She ended up getting a Toyota Aygo and fair-play, it's been good so far.

Agreed with this, also German cars but they are usual more expensive than Japanese cars IMO,  but one thing you must do if purchasing private is to do a HPI check, you can buy them single or in 3 if your looking at lot of cars it is worth it.  As I did a check and it was wanted by the police :P

When you found a car you are thinking of do a Google lots of sites which highlight issues etc for that model .

There's an argument to trying to buy from a dealer rather than a private sale. You can buy private and the car could blow up before you've gone a mile. But it's tough luck as private sales are 'buyer beware'. Unless the seller has told you an out and out lie a private sale car come with zero guarantees. However a trader is supposed to sell a car 'of merchantable quality' and 'fit for purpose'. So it needs to be a runner with no obvious defect that's going to kill it dead anytime soon. There are very dodgy traders but your chances of getting some recourse if the car proves to be a dog are better form a trader sale than a private seller.

Also as TL says check insurance costs as they could take a massive bite out of available funds.

1 of the cheapest to insure, the 1.2 16v you can pick up a fairly decent price.

Very easy to source parts for them when you have your first ding :P

Not being funny but what about a van? Not sure about now but they're cheap to buy and run and cheaper to insure than cars (apparently).

I would ask. of a used car seller. Why are you selling. Then get a feel for how they treated said car. If he's all about. wouldn't do a sharpe "J" turn, wouldn't do a burn out.

I forgot to mention I passed on an automatic,  Nissan micra old style seem to be a popular automatic,  had a quote for a 1.0 for £700 insurance from Admiral

That's insane, that's the same as I pay for our '09 Fiesta 1.6 and '99 Bmw 523iAT together.. Not knowing the insurance cost, as a car mechanic I can recommend Subaru with 2.0l na engines and Suzuki petrol engines as technical marvels when it comes to low repair costs, 1st generation Suzuki swift with front wheel drive will last for ever. If you want small cargo vans, Ford transit connect (not 1.6l French diesel) is pretty solid, avoid French cars, they give me nightmares..

Actually that is pretty reasonable I know new drivers who are 18 having to pay way over 1500 gbp for a 1.1 festia or same size engine
