Anyone know of some decent 8 track recording software for free just to mess about with? not fussed if its trial and pay later for extra bits etc, just for something to play with?

If you don't mind a trial try Reaper?  60- day evaluation period and very powerful.

Try Kristal, I've messed with it a while ago and it seemed reasonable (compared to what I used to use to record with)
