Guys.

It's been about 5 years since I bought a new monitor so I'd appreciate your assistance.

I've been hunting around for a new monitor and spent a lot of time last night looking at the tech.

I've narrowed the search down to 24" and 144hz refresh rate. I think 27" at those frame rates is unaffordable at the moment.

The next thing is brand.

There's a few out there that I've either never heard of or not seen anyone with. For example who is AOC? Are BENQ any good??

I'm looking to spend sub £275 all in.

Any advice greatly received.

Dell Ultrasharp has always been a good brand, so I'd check those out. The benefit of 144hz is currently up for debate, it might not be worth the extra cash if you're not interested in 3D.

My screen is also a bit long in the tooth, but I'm holding out to see what happens with the GSync (and ATI equivalent) technology. I suspect this will be the next big leap in screen tech - they really haven't changed much at all over the last 5-10 years.

A friend has just bought a new Iiyama 27 inch (GB2773HS-GB1) and its a fantastic monitor.
I want one, but cant justify the expense (yet). Novatech are retailing this at just under £250.

Wait for G-Sync as Tut says as 144Hz will be redundant then.

Dell ultra-sharp are the Daddy's again as Tut says for colour representation and general use but are not really "Gaming monitors" with all of the gimmicky bells and whistles. Very happy with mine after 5 years, the colour representation and clarity is top notch even compared to modern pannels so will be sticking with it till GSYNC takes off in a big way or 4k is more affordable.

Another vote for the Dell Ultrasharp. But I also don't buy specifically for gaming. I'm mainly looking for a monitor that is good for photography.

Whatever's gone wrong it's not my fault.

thanks for the input so far.

The G-Sync will not be affordable for at least a couple of years so I'll wait it out. Currently G-Sync monitors are in excess of £600. Not worth the money imho.

Dell Ultrasharp monitors look nice. However the refresh rate GtoG is only 8ms which is 4x the standard monitors I've looked at.

Has anyone heard of AOC or BenQ?

TeaLeaf

AOC I have heard of but not had personally or seen.

Benq is a respected manufacturer with a pretty decent track record in the monitor world.

Working in IT I've come across both, especially working for company's that like to cheap out on such things. To be honest there is nothing wrong with either brand as far as reliability or longevity go.

Benqs had an issue a while ago with the glass falling out from the bezel on their 27" monitors and AOC had a batch of dodgy psu. But all manufacturers can have issues.

My monitor is a DGM (who?) it's a 27" IPS @2560 x 1440 had it a couple of years and not an issue and at £320 was a total bargain.

There are not that many manufacturers of LCD panels so a bit of google and you may find cheaper brands have the same screen as a more expensive one with only the stands, bezels and switches etc different, but the image produced will be just as good.

I have a 24" AOC which was brought out of desperation from PC world (sharp intake of breath) for £150 about 2 and a 1/2 years ago due to my other one dying.

Any updates on this or found a nice one?

I'm also looking so it would be interesting to see what you come up with.

Thanks. As you know I have no independent thought.

Oooooh, don't lean that way!!

had Viewsonic's for many years and they have always been brilliant but have been swayed to the Darkside..................now a VERY HAPPY owner of a DELL (U2412M) and it has without doubt been the bestmnonitor I have ever owned. Colours are sharp and pinpoint (ideal for photography), great IPS screen and fantastic viewing angles.
