From 1.1% failure rate when 4 years old, to 43.1% failure rate at 2.2 years old, which HDD manufacturer do you trust your data with?

Twelve months on from their last report, Backblaze have released an update which charts the success (and failure rate) of three HDD companies:

  • HGST (ex-IBM, then ex-Hitachi and now a subsidiary of Western Digital)
  • Seagate
  • Western Digital

Interesting. I have always used WD HDDs and Samsung SSDs so far, mainly due to claims of reliability and good customer service from both. So far have not had a single problem, and some of my HDDs have been in use for 5+ years now.
All our Gods have abandoned us.

I've just started getting S.M.A.R.T. errors on a HDD I was using as a mirror (3rs old). That's a WD. Had to look that one up as it's the first time I'd seen it.

It'd be interesting to see how SSD's compare. Do we presume they never degenerate?

I tend to buy WD as choice as they seem to be fine - especially the external drive (My Passport) etc which I hack around all over the place.

its funny ive seen this before, people talk about hardware failures then someone posts "hey mine has just quit"

so im going to shut this window down and hope the computer didnt notice it

Fewer moving parts = less to go wrong!

I know that only scratches the surface of things, but I have always been a fan of the 'less to go wrong' philosophy, perhaps it also applies to storage drives :P

can't count the amount of times i had to RMA my old SSD's, I've since got a 840 pro and touch wood had no problems with it
