Yes, it's true, and it's been a long time coming: from February (rumours seem to state the 14th as the date) Star Citizen, the MMO, and Squadron 42, the single-player campaign, will be split and be sold separately.

This means that from that date onwards, new backers will have to buy each game separately, effectively doubling the minimum cost to get both games.

Currently, if you pledge for a Star Citizen game package, you get BOTH games included on your account.

So, if you have been on the fence and haven't pledged for Star Citizen yet, you have only a week or so do get yourself a GAME PACKAGE that includes both games for a single low, low price of $45.

Please let anyone you know who has not yet pledged but expressed an interest in SC so that they can save themselves some extra dosh.

Do we know how this effects gift-able packages we already own ? i assume they remain the same ? I have an LTI Advanced Starter Package i'm hanging on to for a friend as she needs a PC upgrade and is quiet happy in GW2 for now ... I know all the bugs in 2.1.1 will put her right off SC so am not even letting her see it until it's a bit less buggy/more feature rich !! But if that package is going to go all pear shaped i'll get her signed up and package gifted before hand !

Gifting is unaffected: if the package contains both games, then the recipient gets both games.

Whatever's gone wrong it's not my fault.

Interestingly in there it mentions current "Free Flight" has been extended to the 14th so a few extra days to grab anyone still on the fence !
