So whats the secret for tossing the balls on harder targets?

How do I get it alerting with the screen off?

How do I stop it consuming battery at a rate of a Tesla?

Other than that feel my Slowpoke! (no joke a kids game with a character called this)

Been getting into the game and it's quite fun, but it is an enormous waste of time and battery power...

Try throwing a curve ball (spin the ball with your finger then launch at a 45 degree angle). If the Pokemon keep escaping your balls, hit it with a Razz Berry first.

Go settings and check 'battery saver'. When you turn your phone upside down it will go into a 'sleep' mode so you can have it on in your pocket.

Same as above. Also, when you're catching a Pokemon turn off the camera with the 'ar' button. You only have to do this once and it will stay off.
You will still run out of battery though and your phone will still get as hot as the sun.

Keep your Slowpoke to yourself!

You might find if you're using an Android phone that the battery saver crashes the game, when the game wakes up again it looks like it's working but doesn't respond, so all you can do is kill it & restart.

Also when try to catch the Pokemon try to aim for the circle that is shrinking, at certain spots if it you hit it you will get a " nice " or a "great" throw this will give you Exp and increase the catch right. I am glad and happy to see some people playing this. What level and team is everyone ?

RizZy

My tip for getting your spin on when catching is to spin your ball upto speed in the bottom left corner & swipe up & right towards the bottom of the ring that surrounds the target - saw that tip somewhere & it seems to work.

Just took myself out for a walk as I'd not left the house all day, mapped out a 5k route to get my eggs hatched & the damn app decided it'd had enough about 3/4 of the way round, still got a pretty good haul of about 30 pokemon.

& the pokemon tracking sites aren't working at the mo, but I have found this - http://www.pokemongomap.info/ it list all the gyms/pokestops, pretty useful.

Thanks for the tips folks. I tried the curve thing, funny thing is when I just do a straight throw it often earns a curve bonus. I tried the spin until the sparks fly method and for sure if you start the spin in the centre of the screen then the level of curve you have to generate is far higher and less accurate. I'll try starting the spin in the the corner RizZy, nice advice.

I'm level 9, Yellow team. I have a couple of level 400+ beasties and I still have not tried to train anything or level stuff up. My local station this morning had a level 2200CP guarding it this morning and then a level 740CP as well.

Is there any point to the gym because all I see are impossible battles. I could throw 30x 10CP Pigey's at it but I hear having a collection of them does something.

The only thing I know of Pidgey's being good for is leveling up your character, if you get a load of them & a lucky egg, then you use the egg & evolve as many as you can whilst getting the x2 xp from the egg, as they don't take many candies to evolve.

Yes, Pidgey, Weedle and Caterpie. Gather a ton of them. Pop a lucky egg, and evolve as many as you can in the 30 minutes. Also save up any others you want to evolve till you do this :) Gives you 2 or 3 levels super quick.

So basically evolve with just candy? Do the low levels? High levels? Or just all of them? As much as you have candy to evolve?

I see these 3 characters don't really get caught with high CP, I have a 158 Pidgey, 86 Weedle and a 45 Caterpie and I have the candy to evolve 14 of them across 3 species. Is 14 a reasonable number to wast a Lucky Egg on or better to waiting for more candy? (I hav eplenty Pidgey's they can be caught whilst cycling!)

I found this in my search to understand the battles: http://www.trustedreviews.com/opinions/how-to-win-battle-pokemon-go-battling-training-fighting-gym-guide
Then this which details the best chances you have against various other opponents: http://pokemondb.net/type

And this basic guide because the game has no tutorial so there's no way on knowing what the hell to do. Fortunately I have a friendly gym next to my house (yeah like a fat boy like me ever visits a gym!) and I tried it out and found I sucked big time due to not actually even knowing what to do to fight.

I found from that page:

You can take up to six Pokémon into battle with you, so make sure you pick your best six in order to have the highest chance of victory.

When it comes to battles themselves, the goal is, as you'd expect, simply to lower the enemy Pokémon's health bar to zero, whereupon it will faint and you'll be faced with the next puny opponent who thinks they've got what it takes.

Attacking â€" Attacking is the main component of gym battles, and is as simple as tapping the area of your phone's screen where the enemy Pokémon appears. Tapping in this way will unleash a normal attack. The more of these you land, the more you'll build up your special attack, represented by the blue bars below your main health bar in the top-left of the screen. Once you've got a special ready to go, tap and hold the screen to let it loose on your unsuspecting opponent.

Dodging â€" The other main component of gym battles is dodging. Again, it's a simple concept, requiring you to swipe left or right to manoeuvre your Pokémon out of harm's way. Since you can only restore your creature's health once the battle is over, dodging can be an effective way of conserving your precious life energy during a particularly intense battle.

You evolve from basic to the second form. That only costs 12 candy. You can also transfer a few to gain extra candy. 30 minutes is actually a long time, so you usually run out of things to evolve well before the time is up. That's why I usually combine this activity with a trip to a park or something, so I get full benefit from the Lucky Egg.

Also Pokemon type matters in battle. See the chart here
http://www.ign.com/wikis/pokemon-go/Pokemon_Go_Pokemon_Type_Chart?utm_campaign=plus.google.com&utm_source=plus.url.google.com

Further, a Pokemon can have several different attack types as main and special. Generally a "same type" attack will be more powerful, in example a water pokemon with a water attack will be more powerful than a water pokemon with another type of attack.

I find dodging every 2-4 normal attacks, depending on attack speed of attacker/defender, or after a special attack works well. You want to be dodging right before/as the other guy is attacking, so with a fast attacker and slow defender, you can get in 4 attacks.

I cracked open a lucky egg and leveled up from 11 to nearly 14 evolving about 12 Pidgeys and 8 Weedle's , and now every normal pokemon ball fails to catch anything. This is even on CP10 Pokemon. Their scaling is nonsense. I have some great balls which work every time.

Yea I noticed quite a bit of difference between lvls 6 & 7 in my ability to catch stuff, I would guess the difficulty curve is to encourage buying stuff, maybe, probably.

I dont have this problem tbh, I catch 400CP pokemon with normal pokeballs.
