Which Internet Provider?

My contract with BT is up and I'm ready to switch to fibre. Anyone recommend an ISP?

Alternatively, which comparison sites to people use these days?

I tend to work from home a lot these days so I want something that's reliable but will also let me work when the kids are home stealing my bandwidth

I'm with PlusNet. It's cheap, the connection is very stable and fast, but their customer service in recent years has become pretty awful.

I've worked with Zen in the past, they're a really good outfit and people who have their home broadband rarely have a bad word to say about them. Toby's right about the cost though, it's steeper than others.

Virgin. Because I didn't need a land-line.

If you want to reach a human easily for technical support, don't mind paying a premium, need native IPv6 connectivity, want un-filtered internet (unless you're forced to run McAfee transparent proxy like I am on my work PC's) and host a server at home then I recommend Goscomb (fits my needs).

Otherwise the only real contentder where I live is Virgin because I can get cable - otherwise I'm limited to FTTC which is 14/1mbs where I am which is slow, even for fiber. But better than 300kps ADSL.

BT have absolutely abysmal customer service, and should be avoided at all costs.

I will never, ever go back to BT. I resent even having to think about their horrible service. Words cannot describe how much I loathe them.

Seconded, just because they cold call me every month without fail trying to get me to upgrade to their broadband.
Each month I tell them to get lost because their product doesn't work with what I need (IPv6).
I had tried writing to them, emailing them, explaining patiently, but they just don't get the idea. I will never ever use them, just because of this. It's borderline harassment.

BT have an utterly wretched reputation for customer service, and it's for a very good reason. Something they're currently doing their best to pass down to Plusnet :sideways:

Virgin used to be equally bad, if not worse, but apparently they've turned that around and are now pretty good. Which is impressive!

I have sky now and have so far had no problems...but they aren't cheap and the internet is middling.

On the problem of family using your bandwidth, a few simple QoS rules should solve that problem. Just either limit them or guarantee your PC what you need a s a minimum to do everything you want to do.
