I was never shown the why, just the how when I was giving out the badges for GTA. I think (like there was any doubt) that whitey is right. They're meant to symbolise not that a player is 'good' at a game, but that they've demonstrated that they understand our way of playing. What was made clear was that I was (by stepping up to GL) able to select those that did show the right stuff. I'm not sure we 'gain' anything by losing the badges, but then again we are trying to attract new members to the community (I've managed three this week!!) With an aim to hopefully have them chip in a bit towards the running costs. We should perhaps discuss this along with that aim if it's suitable.

The badges are for use by the Game Leader. It's up to them to decide how they get used, as Whitey says. When a game dies the badges usually stay as an historic record for those who played the game. When a game gets upgraded i.e. Arma, CoD, BF etc the badge gets recycled rather than replaced. So we have Arma badges and not Arma 1 badges, Arma 2 badges etc.

However it's a bit hit and miss. So a GL might add and remove badges from players dependent on their level of activity, but when a game gets shelved and the GL retires those with badges might retain them but those who stopped playing earlier might have already had them . So that badge becomes a snapshot of who played the game just as it was dropped.

I'd like to get a consensus about what to do with retired games, but think we should leave existing games to the GL to manage.

Whatever's gone wrong it's not my fault.

as far as i'm concerned i think it should stay as a snapshot, they were earned so keep them, i'm not going to take away any mine craft ones, although i may remove the old admins and change them to green as they earned the right to wear a minecraft tag

I came into this world with nothing,
through careful management I\'ve got most of it left.

This is all I'm asking for lol

I'm not trying to tell any GL how to manage their individual badges for active games.

I'm just saying there is no continuity for retired games. We have gta badges, but none for any battlefield game, is the example i have provided. Both games (/series) are retired, but badges have been handled differently.

I don't understand why this is so complicated guys, I feel like I'm asking for something ridiculous here when in my head this seems an entirely appropriate question to ask???

There's also a limitation on the maximum number of badges possible within the forum display area, so we will never have perpetual badges for all games.

I can't help but notice that you seem to be getting stressed about it chaos. No disrespect, but this is a gaming group.

Well since GTA was retired, I lost my gold badge, which I fully expected. I'm not here to earn brownie points and collect badges, however, so I'm not concerned about a replacement green one or anything. I'll be honest, I think they're valuable to make some players feel more included and (dare I say it) special. Some people enjoy the sense of belonging, be it past or present.

GTA and Toxikk deactivated. Everything else is an active game with a GL who can add and remove badges as they please.

None taken, but this gaming group means an awful lot to me and when I see something that I think we could do better, I will always, always bring it up. Every single time. Even if it drives you all mad :D

Badges mean different things to different people, but they have the potential to be quite a badge of pride for some of our members, particularly younger ones perhaps, and I would like to ensure we have a system in place that protects that.

Having no clear system at all does the complete opposite, it devalues the badges - I don't want to see this happen.

If I have seemed stressed about it, it is a combination of my obsession with particulars, eye to detail, and borderline OCD (I should be a Doctor or something) that sure leads me to get more fixated with what may seem like little things to others. Like I said, I care, am invested in dMw, and want us to be the best community we can be, regardless of what exactly we do here.

But look I hope it is apparent I am only trying to help the community here... And I am not saying 'do this because I say so', I am asking for those in charge of this particular bugbear to look into it and decide what they think is the best way forward, and to implement that, regardless of if I individually agree with the decision or not.

I hope that makes some sense...

I don't think anyone is complaining about your intent, and it's clear you're trying to correct a problem. So let's get down to the brass tacks.

There is some fuzziness surrounding the process of retiring badges. We've established that GLs (it's just occurred to me that I'm not a GL and I'm commenting on this. Appropriate?) Determine how those badges are given out for their games, so that's not in question.

So should we establish a static system for retired games (going forward) and make efforts to document the process?

You're a member of the community that wears the badges, remain an admin for Ark, and have been a GL responsible for dishing them out, so yes I think it is appropriate :P

If Smilo has already deactivated GTA and Toxic, perhaps the decision has been made - maybe council can agree on a standard process going forwards, something like keep green badges for 6 months after game retirement before removing, for example... whatever works best.

We have no problem with you airing your views of course :). However, reading this thread though you are coming across as really angsty mate..  just my 2 cents. Love you and it's fine to be passionate but there's ways and means.

Whitey and Smilo have explained the system - such as it is.

The system probably isn't perfect and yes, we need to have a look at it.

We're not going to install a load of blue badges for old games. The CS Veteran badge is a special one-off as it harks back to our history and when we played CS competitively.

I can see both arguments - one for the historic aspect and also that badges for old games should be retired. (Not necessarily when they cease to become supported but more when they cease being supported AND people have stopped playing them. Minecraft is a good example. We stopped it being a supported game but we're leaving the badges until such time as the servers are empty and no one is playing).

It's up to individual GL's to award and remove badges for their games. They have absolute power over that. Should TwoBad wish to remove my green ARMA badge as I don't play then that's within his right. Some GL's will be more efficient than others on this but it's of little concern. From a Council pov, we're more concerned that admins are active on the servers and do ask GL's to regularly review their admins, check they're still active then act accordingly.

As to the wider issue of badges and their legacy, we will discuss it and we will come up with a more defined practice. you're quite right in that it needs to be standardised - whichever side of the boat that falls.
