Socket 1151 vs 2066

Hi All,

I'm considering replacing my older Socket 1150 microATX motherboard with something that can handle the new Intel CPUs and the higher clock rate DDR 4 RAM.

I'm reading that the CORE-X chips that the 2066 architecture supports are expected to run very hot when overclocked and hot generally so my questions are:

1) Is it worth even bothering with 2066? If so what chip is even worth it?
2) What new i7 CPUs that fit the 1151 socket is the best bang for buck one out there right now?
3) Anyone got any 1151 or 2066 mATX motherboard advice from experience?

my 6700k i 7 is 1151 and runs fine, i'd wait a while if u want to get a core-x chip.my mobo is a asus rog hero 8 btw.

Thanks mate, but the hero 8 is full ATX. I need micro to fit into my case. I have no intention of buying a new case, cooler, gfx card, fans or drives. Just the mobo, CPU, ram.

Just from experience I wouldn't bother with any of the '-X' CPUs or the motherboards needed to support them. I would guess if you needed that sort of multi threaded horsepower for work purposes you would already have it.. So likely such a cpu is unnecessary and won't get you ant benefit in gaming over your current rig.

Re upgrading to 1151 I would wait for at least the next iteration. Intel are always tick tock with their upgrades and you likely end up spending cash for only incremental improvements that again don't affect your gaming.

Chaos is pretty much on the money. It comes down to use. The smaller board will limit your options for heat management as well. So if the X series are reporting hot....

Pretty much the same as now, I have all my main components with corsair hydros on them. Seems to run fine and I have an overclock at 4589.16Mhz for the 4790K and memory at 1903.8MHz with 9:10:9:27.

What I'm after is for someone to say Albert, don't be a dick, you don't need an upgrade right now. :d

I've pretty much talked myself out of it because whilst a 7700K is 48% more powerful than the 4790K, with the OC it's a bit more even. Then the DDR4 RAM CL of 32GB memory is 14-15 whilst not a major about more, 9 is nice.

That 48% figure is likely some random benchmark that has no bearing on 'real world' scenarios. That CPU is good enough even without any Overclock for now. Remember all game development is held back by GPUs and Console (largest common denominator) so your RAM/CPU etc will last for years while they play catch up.

If you want to pay like £2k for 5 extra frames, taking you from 225 to 230, then go ahead. Or you could give me that money and for 1 week I will bring you beer while you game. The latter you will notice, the former you will not.

It's quite a step up but still I agree the gains are not in the right places.

Yeah that's not a bad site at all. I still would be wary of reading into figures in isolation though (20% 'better means nothing if your current CPU is already making light work of your games), but it provides a good place to start.
