All hope of telling which driver is which as they head towards the camera (or your seat in the grandstands) is now gone, as the FIA announced that the Halo system will be introduced for the 2018 season.  Fortunately not the ghastly perspex distortion screen that made Vettel feel ill and dizzy, but the ugly and view blocking 'wishbone' system.

Open wheel racing is the essence of F1 to me and much as driver safety is important, there's such a thing as going too far.   I think Todt just went too far.

Interesting design, looks like it would be quite distracting though.  Hard problem to tackle.

Driver perspective:

Yeah let's solve the problem of projectile risk by obscuring the central view area of every driver whereby decreasing their overall vision which in itself could lead to confusion and more chance of accidents? Are the FIA for real? Nikki Lauda is calling this insane.

If I were a driver I'd hate it.  What happens when the car flips, or is damaged and the car on its side?  Upside down in gravel (think the last Alonso excursion) the driver would be stuck.

And it just looks plain nasty.

It's open wheel racing, there is risk.   Let it be.
