Here's one for you. I have a full copy of XP Home and I'm going to try to blag a re-authorisation on it for the new rig. Failing that, can I get away with buying the upgrade with the backup of a W98SE disc WITHOUT installing W98SE first? I heard somewhere that you could install the upgrade to the point where it will ask for a copy of 98 or Me. Is this true or am I deluding myself?
You should not have a problem getting a re-authorisation on the full XP home. Explain you have upgraded your hardware and replaced disk and have to reinstall.

That's what I figured but there is rather a lot of hardware changed! I want to keep XP on the old one. (I understand it won't be able to be updated but hey!)

So, one of these then? 465 or 365?
Just ordered the 465 due to mine playing silly buggers at the minute  <_<

Another discerning purchaser. Progress thus far on mine. PSU=in CD-RW=in DVD=in floppy drive=in HDD=in. Motherboard is expected on Wednesday so all being well everything should be up and running. (I gotta baaaad feelin' about this. I bet I just put the kibosh on it!) I confess to being a bit apprehensive about putting the right wire in the right places. There are so many of them! Upgrading a bit at a time isn't so bad. Only one thing at a time to worry about. But this lot.............!

I'm putting an XP3200 system together for my Dad this week - a nice Folding machine if ever I saw one :D  It will be installed as a nice service and overclocked a few degrees seeing as I got 2x512MB Dual Channel Corsair PC3700 RAM to go in it

Don't worry Ron, I think I have the answer for you..................

Uninstall everything and re-install it at your busiest time of day. If you're getting more than a dozen spare cables then give up and try again. Uninstall and Re-install all the component parts. Re-install Steam. Change from left to right handed. Job done! Hope this helps.

Fortunately it is not my money, it is his :D  He is buying it for his business and to make sure it can handle all the power point and digital photography that he does.

Re the motherboard:  You're going for an Opteron based system?

Like everything Ron - you just need a methodical approach to it.  List all the bits you've got, then wire each individual component up completely to the mobo/psu and tick it off the list as you go.

Then (and I can't stress this enough), BEFORE you apply any power, recheck all the connections one last time.

Doing it this way won't win any prizes for prettiest install, but it will ensure that everything's hooked up correctly.  Once you've got a handle on where all the wires are supposed to go and you've verified all the components work, then you can start worrying about cable routing and making the innards flash, if you like that sort of thing :)
