It is that wonderful time of the year again when we have some very kind people and businesses willing to sponsor some real ales or real ciders that will appear at the LAN for your enjoyment at a bargain £1.50 per pint. All of the brews have been sampled by the now legendary beer festival team or pacifically asked for by the sponsor and we are fortunate enough for the hotel being able to supply it to us.

REAL ALE #4

Ape Ale by Blue Monkey Brewery

Sponsored by: Penfold, Brother Tobious, Lionheart and SoonJung

A requested beer this one, but also one of the beers tried and thoroughly enjoyed at the GBBF this year, and all giving high ratings. We all enjoyed the Blue Monkey “Infinity” beer from previous Lan’s and so have opted to try a barrel of one of their other apes. A strong, hoppy and interesting beer that will provide all the Monkey you can handle.

Ape Ale is a strong pale ale. A complex and sophisticated IPA, using assertive American hops and a crisp clear finish using the hard water style from Nottinghamshire. At 5.4% this is not for the faint hearted but full of hoppy impact that will have the taste buds tingling.

5.4% is strong? That's just about where a normal pilsner should be [emoji14]

Still, looking forward to all the beers presented so far, as well as the ciders to come :)

As a drinker from both worlds, I think the UK cask style and strength with Co2 vs a Euro stronger % nitro canister, the cask hits me a hell of a lot harder above 5% than any European beer does. Plus cask starts to become very heavy to drink at around 6% I feel, anything stronger is like tar. It's like drinking Quads all night, tough next morning and unsteady feet.

Slight change to the Ale 4 and we have been let down by the brewery and some escaping Monkeys. Looks like they over sold the batch they made and we are some of the unlucky ones to miss out, either that or our own Suicidal Monkey went and drank it all the sneaky thing.

Because of time restraints I have had to make a call on an easy to supply beer which although we have had before is still a good classic one in my opinion. Sorry guys and girls but sometimes even when you play a full house you still get beaten by Cheese Puff (just ask Twobad).

REAL ALE #4

Ghost Ship by Adnams

Sponsored by: Penfold, Brother Tobious, Lionheart and SoonJung

Back up beer this one but still a good one and according to Untapped much appreciated.

Ghost Ship has good bitterness with attactive lemona nd lime aromas. The beer is a ghostly pale ale which takes it's inspiration from Adnams 600 year old haunted pub, The Bell. Brewed with a selection of malts - Pale Ale, Rye Crystal and Cara. We use Citra, and a blend of other American hop varieties to create some great citrus flavors at a useful 4.5% abv.

Thanks for sorting this Gortex. Last minute problems happen, but great result at the end, I'm sure it'll go down well. Cheers!

Ghost Ship is a very good beer and one I've had a few run-ins with. A great backup choice :)

Not possible. I'd remember something like drinking a brewery dry ...

Good save righting the ship with the ship
