Cloud Imperium have spent all their money

But on a positive note

Cloud Imperium have spent all their money :D

Because that's exactly what they promised they would do... spend backers money developing the game. Naively I assumed they still had millions squirrelled away for a rainy day but apparently not. For the last three years they have been spending more than they have been earning. As of the linked report CI are down to their last $14 million as of the end of 2017. Not sure where they are as of the end of 2018?  But the money keeps rolling in so that might not be a bad thing. However bearing in mind that they are currently spending about $4m a month developing the game, if the pledges stopped they would go bust by mid May this year.

I can see why they still aggressively push the development and sale of new ships and assets. If they stopped there's a chance they would go bust before they could release Squadron 42, which is going beta in 2019 and apparently gold in 2020.

I know nothing about AAA game development and imagine the people at CI know a great deal. It's nice to know the $200m+ has actually been spent on making the game (I gather $200m isn't a shocking figure for developing a game the size and scope of Star Citizen, Destiny cost $500m !!) It's also a bit worrying to think they rely on continued ship sales to keep their heads above water.

Whatever's gone wrong it's not my fault.

Glassdoor average it at $92K but for a senior designer or principal dev that could be $130K in Austin, TX. Not as much as in NYC or SF, or Vancouver.

They have a decent mix of talent, cost and supply in Austin.

Other places tend to be cheaper to hire talent than the USA so the UK and German studios will be less expensive to run.

I notice that info was published on the 20th December 2018. Cutting it very very late in the year to publish the previous accounts. That's rather suspicious in itself.

Publishing late is less suspicious than you would think and a very common thing. The question should really be  'are they published in time'.

The real surprise for me here is that Destiny cost $500 million! AAA games have unbelievable budgets.

The article doesn't read negatively, so I assume for now they're relatively happy with their situation. Let's hope so anyway!
