I what can honestly be described as a moment of insanity my wife has only gone and bought a 55" OLED 4K TV. I thought ridiculously expensive impulse purchases of high end Tec were the husbands responsibility? I've been advised to not reinforce gender specific roles and "Go and ask those odd techy mates of yours how it all works."

We've been living with an ancient 42" HD TV and never much thought about what 'resolution' things were in. But now it would be useful to get to grips with the best places to get decent 4K content. I've a Netflix subscription that has just been upgraded to the UHD version, An Amazon Prime Sub that apparently will stream whatever is most appropriate and a Google Chromecast Ultra that is good for 4K. We're Virgin Media customers and still have the old TiVo box which is HD not UHD.

That being said I don't know what if any UHD content is actually available on the new Virgin TV V^ box?

Assuming we can stream Netflix, Google and Amazons UHD offerings plus rent movies from Google Play and Amazon Prime in 4K is there any point in buying a 4K disc player? I've never been much of a movie library owner at at £18 - 20 for a 4K disc not likely to buy very many if I did get a player. Is 4K disc quality that much better than streaming 4K that it's worth the investment?

I also watch the occasional movie via Plex  and would just "purchase" new stuff in 4K rather than old 1080p

Any suggestions as to where else decent UHD content might live?

Cheers.

This FireStick should be enough to get you going. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Amazon-Fire-TV-Stick-4K-Ultra-Hd-With-Alexa-Voice-Remote-Streaming-Media-Player/dp/B079QB9BD7/ref=sxts_sxwds-bia-wc-p13n1_0?crid=3HFNUGLI0BU0A&cv_ct_cx=fire+stick&dchild=1&keywords=fire+stick&pd_rd_i=B079QB9BD7&pd_rd_r=766c7760-c37e-41e5-9d10-a6f04ac39269&pd_rd_w=y2hYu&pd_rd_wg=evRFs&pf_rd_p=bc54d678-36cb-4126-bb48-d9575267d544&pf_rd_r=YGF15S5AYVCTX7PW1N87&psc=1&qid=1605814685&sprefix=fire%2Caps%2C189&sr=1-1-79e1db8b-ac0e-4e53-86a0-e4b4f9bb89cd

I can't comment on your subscriptions but for sure the 4K Chromecast will drag 4K from whereever you pay for 4K level content. (Was that the freebie you got recently as a YouTube Prime member?).

The 2+ device Netflix is 4K for sure and works with the Chromecast for us. Virgin I suspect will depend on your box and whether it's 4K ready.

In the end whenever you don't get 4K in the content the TV should happily upscale to improve practically anything you view, as far as I read.

It depends.

Streaming might be in 4K resolution, but the bit rate is highly variable. Netflix recently cut their bitrates quite significantly, presumably because everyone was at home using their servers.

We do have a 4K player, it cost just under £100 on eBay.

We have a small collection of 4K discs, mainly films / shows that when we watch, we actually want the absolute best possible fidelity we can get with the set up we have. IMO, this works quite nicely.
All our Gods have abandoned us.

Netflix are getting torn to pieces right now being pretty much the Internet's biggest bandwidth consumer, combined with home working, their peers and partners are stinging them for increased costs.

So much so they are hiring a Director of Partner Engagement for https://jobs.netflix.com/jobs/871859. :D Nice job if anyone has the necessary experience.

Cheers me dears.

I'll grab the Firestick, it seems to somewhat duplicate what I get with the Chromecast Ultra, but for twenty quid why not.
I might get a player but will probably see how we get on with Streaming.

Thanks
