I confess I miss the ftp. Any chance of it coming back? Also it was convinient when sharing smaller files e.g. skins, maps, applications.

I've got my own ftp server that can be used for small files etc.

ftp.spacejelly.co.uk
user jellyftp
pass yummyjelly

this is sat on my dsl connection, so uploading from it will be maxed at 32K

how about setting one up on your monster connection Sadako?

The trouble with the FTP was that it took the Blackadder traffic from 20GB per month to over 400GB per month.  If you check the hosting cost for that sort of bandwidth then you'll see that dMw were taking the roght royal piss out of the Crosswired hosting support - and that's simply not on.

The problem with reinstating an FTP is that it will not be just small files that get shared.  G's idea is a good one Sadako if you have no bandwidth limits?

An FTP may be set up to help pre-LAN organisation, but this will be strictly limited in terms of access and duration.

My current connection is 8 Mbit downstream and 0.818 Mbit upstream with "no" bandwidth limits. Hopefully it will be better when they have delivered the full connection. I could run an ftp but there are some problems.

1. It couldn't be running 24/7 because my girlfriend works from home and she needs the internet connection during work hours.

2. We have a small room that acts as our office and keeping my comp turned on all the time would increase the noise level and that also would mean a no no during work hours.

3. The upstream connection is too slow atm but when/if I get 13/13 or 26/26 Mbit as they promised it seems more doable. Right now I don't think my gf would like the idea of all the upstream connction going on a ftp. When the new connection has arrived it will be easier to bring up for discussion.

4. I have NO idea how to set up a FTP server but that is a minor problem.

5. Electricity is bloody expensive in Sweden. For financial reasons I couldn't afford to have a ftp running 24/7. I am still a student so my salary isn't that huge (yet). So the ftp would only be running when my comp is on which limits it a bit.

Still you get all my stuff at the LAN anyway. ;)

well, as for servers I use this.

very easy to setup. Mine is running on my laptop so it is 100% silent :) I've also got the LFS server running on that too.
