With this borked version of steam, is it still possible to set up your own LAN game to run around and test a map, or do you have to get someone to put it on a server, and test it that way?

you can still run your own lan game but then you play alone so you can check map out that way.

But the best way is that the map is put on a server and that you test it with more people that way you learn the map more faster then that you play it alone.

for graphics, lighting and bug testing I'd get it up to scratch on your own pc, then brighten it a little and try it out on a server with other players to find out where the choke points and such are, so you know vaguely how far to move them ;-)

I'd say, test it with atleast 4 people. Maybe you can the test the map at BB's server if you ask him nicely. There are allways a few of us on friends so if you need any help, just say so.
