Ok, I like all the trivial stuff and you two freakshows appear well informed. ( I have a similar friend which is where I get this from)

In Bladerunner one of the backgrounds is the Millenium Falcon stood on it's end to make part of the city scape.

In Panic Room the flash director runs a shot that tracks across a room, and through the handle of a mug, which is impossible, but subtley clever.

You two talking about the depth of Robocop has me though. I enjoyed RC, but as an action film, nothing more....am I simple?

Oh and don't point me to a site, I like the little tidbits that people know.

For once I entirely agree with you Benny I think we should give them the Smilo and Chimp forum where they could discuss various aspects of Directors, Producers, Actors et al. Plus reviewing all new releases. Their last dicussion was well set out and contained a lot of in depth knowledge. Good stuff guys keep it up. 8)

Thanks guys - trust me, when we worked together in the same office there was rarely a productive day, and as for our road trips to East London and East Anglia...well that should remain private lest old wounds be opened ;)  He still owes me a tenner from a bet in Canary Wharf ;)

As for what you said Benny bout Panic Room, it was shot by David Fincher (Fight Club, Alien 3, Seven) who is reknowned as being highly innovative in terms of the shots he chooses.  If I remember rightly from PR there's also a fantastic show as you pan down the house and the camera zooms through the keyhole to show Jared Leto breaking in.  CGI if I remember rightly, but just skillfully blended in with real action (please pay attention at the back Mr Lucas).

As for Robocop - Verhoeven has a track record of using movies to poke fun or seriously question aspects of society.  Look at Total Recall, Robocop, Starship Troopers - they all have similar satirical and philosophical themes.

For example in Starship Troopers you have these totally vacant but beautiful actors who seem to be cast for the express purpose of looking dumb and beautiful - they are pawns in this seemingly facist state.  This sterilised society that forces you to serve time in the military before you can gain full access as a "citizen"?!?  Screwed up to be sure, but definitely intentional.

The fact that the bugs are largely instinctive animals - not much more intelligence than your average dog.  How could man take such a beating?  Because we keep encroaching on their space in our ever-accelerating spread (as on earth) to populate more and more areas.  Our total inability to live in harmony with anything natural.  Did the asteroid come from the bugs?  You're never given any proof.  Weapons of mass destruction being used for another agenda, anyone?

The info requests "Do you want to know more" showing this almost nazi-ish control of information, as we have today you could argue.

In Robocop you have this corporation "Omni Consumer Products" - a vast global behemoth of a company that influences every aspect of modern life, right up to the military and police force.  Completely immoral to appease shareholders - they specifically place cops in high risk areas to find candidates for their next experiment.  When the 20 seconds to comply scene is over Dick Jones says it's a "setback".  No one is brought to justice or held accountable -  "Life in the big city" as Bob Morton puts it afterward.  Some parallel there with modern scandals like Exxon or Bohpal.

Look at all the ads at the beginning of the film - families playing games of nuclear war, military satellites malfunctioing and setting Malibu alight, the seedy man who keeps saying "I'd buy that for a dollar".  It all keys into American media's love of sex and violence, something Michael Moore explores in "Bowling For Columbine".

That was just my brain-dump in a few minutes.  There's plenty more where that came from.....

Ok let's see how the movie nutters handle this question. Why is the movie GATTACA called just that?  8)  I know the answer just wanted to see if you do. :)

If you haven't seen it shame on you. Great sci-fi movie with Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman.
