seems we may have a couple peeps on a provider who peers with telecomplete over a dodgy connection..... would need more traces or better still a few hours of "ping plotter" to see.

Tealeaf - what goes on with your connection?
Nothing much is the real answer - nothing much in the way of speed anyway.  I get fairly regular lag and spikes atm.  Probably because I am on a cheapo ISP atm cos I am using over 300 hours per month dial up

Here's this afternoon's trace:

  1    39 ms    38 ms    38 ms  srv1.lcst.uk.mediaWays.net [62.55.80.78]
  2    39 ms    38 ms    37 ms  rmws-lcst-uk01-fe-0-0-0-0.nw.mediaways.net [62.55.80.65]
  3    40 ms    40 ms    41 ms  rmwc-milt-uk01-so-0-1-1-0.nw.mediaways.net [62.55.80.109]
  4    49 ms    49 ms    49 ms  rmwc-lond-uk01-pos-4-6.nw.mediaways.net [62.55.80.149]
  5    48 ms    49 ms    48 ms  rmws-lond-uk01-ge-0-3-0-0.nw.mediaways.net [195.71.254.5]
  6    53 ms    49 ms    50 ms  linx1.telecomplete.net [195.66.224.139]
  7    61 ms    58 ms    57 ms  r1.tcw.telecomplete.net [193.0.255.230]
  8    65 ms    70 ms    66 ms  netserve-gw.cust.telecomplete.net [213.160.121.26]
  9    64 ms    63 ms    61 ms  homer.deadmen.co.uk [193.110.88.20]

Btw, the r1 hop on telecomplete is a real bugger - it messes with connection speed big time.  Check Oldie's above trace for example  :(

Try it without ZoneAlarm. It slaughtered my gaming.

So what is suggested to replace ZoneAlarm Pro when I am on my multi-hour sessions?  Remember I am on an ISDN dial up and not behind a router or other hardware firewall.  My PC currently has 2 connections to the outside world:

During work hours it is part of a network (based at my home) and all network internet connections go via a Cisco 2503 ISDN router.  The config for the router limits the hours the router dial up to normal work hours (to avoid racking up massive connection bills) and is limited to 64kbps.

Outside of work hours my PC also has a PCI ISDN card and dials up direct using 64 or 128kbps as needed for downloads, browsing or gaming etc.

The work connection I am fairly happy to run without ZAP because of the router config, but what should replace ZAP on the direct dial ups?  Or should I just go and buy another router?

I've reverted back to the firewall in Norton Internet Security 2004 which is having no perceptable effect on my gaming connection.
