FATAL

hi there
i own an impreza 2000turbo and my clutch went at 58000 this was the origanal clutch, so under the warranty it was changed (subaru proven warranty)
at 60000 it was serviced then at 63000miles my clutch is slipping so i take it back and have to wait 2 weeks before they can look at it.
they have it for a whole day and when i pick it up they say
Quoteyes your clutch is slipping

???tell me somethink i dont know
so i ask what happens now and they say its not covered under warranty due to driver error (slipping the clutch)wear and tear
so i added even if i did (which i dont)slip the clutch it should still last more than 5000miles
right so i now want to find out how much its gonna cost so i ask for a written estimate ,
this takes 4 weeks to do so
i phone to book it in and its gonna take 4 weeks
finally my car go's in and that day i get a phonecall it's subaru with some bad news my flywheel needs replacing cos its cracked under the heat.
so the estimate has gone from £550 to over £1000 pounds

but surely they should of changed the flywheel when they changed the clutch at 58000, and if they didnt change the flywheel at 58000 and it was damaged would that cause my clutch to go after 4/5000miles

please help me with this matter i feel like im being ripped off

plus ive spoke to tradingstandards but still waiting for advice

How long ago did they replace the clutch?

Do they guarantee their workmanship - as you say 5000 miles is a bit short...

I don't blame you for feeling ripped off, I've had a similar situation with my car and the main dealer - I've never been back ((un)fortunately mine was out of its warrenty period).

Have you tried getting a second opinion from a recommeded (by your friends) independent garage?

Sorry I can't give you any more practical advice.

I write down everything I want to remember. That way, instead of spending a lot of time trying to remember what it is I wrote down, I spend the time looking for the paper I wrote it down on.

my 2c :coolio:

riding the clutch would be driver error. i.e. driving with the clutch slightly depressed by your foot on the pedal so that it slips slightly. The fact that the first clutch lastet 58,000 miles would suggest this is not the case...

having a clutch that's slipping on its own is a servicing error. i.e. the guys who installed the thing didn't set it up right (tightly-enough?) so it's been slipping.

I'd go for that 2nd opinion from a trusted recommendation, and carefully check all the warranties/guarantees/etc you got from the 58,000 and 60,000 repairs and services. If the clutch wasn't fitted correctly at 58,000 then you'd hope it'd be picked up at 60,000, if not then perhaps it was realigned (wrongly) at 60,000

If the flyeheel was cracked it will reduce the running life of the clutch big time ....It may well have cracked the first time the clutch went and they didnt pick it up  :( in that case its not your problem but difficult to prove

Saying that £1000 is not a fair price for a clutch/flywheel change .....for that price i would goto a perfomance specilaist buy a weight reduced flywheel and sports/racing clutch and have a good garage put them on .....thats if it dont screw the waranty

failing that buy stock parts and have a good garage fit them ...the repairs you need are not difficult you should be looking at £300 tops and it never happened  ;)

Here's my pennies worth.

The clutch went at 58,000 miles. Under warranty it should and was replaced. The dealer also had a responsibility to effect a complete and satisfactory repair. If they missed the cracked flywheel then they didn't do this and their repair was defective (your clutch would fail again prematurely due to the missed flywheel problem). Assuming you can prove this, then the law would require the dealer to make good it's mistake and replace the flywheel under warranty as well as the replacement clutch which failed due to their error.

There are two problems.

First you're going to have to get an independent assessment and it's not certain that the assessor will be able to confirm that the problem stemmed from the broken flywheel. Plus ot will cost you money to get one.

Second, Car dealers are notoriously hard to get justice from. They tend to work on the basis that until you actually take them to court they will never pay out on something like this. If they are sure you can't prove your case then you've got no hope. Continuing customer loyalty is an unknown concept to most of them.

Your only hope is to either proove the flywheel was broken before the warranty ended and that it was the cause of both damaged clutches, or failing that get Watchdog interested !

Whatever's gone wrong it's not my fault.

The AA and RAC are sometimes pretty good at giving advice/guidance on this. I had a garage screw up a brake change and ended up losing all braking because hyd fluid went all over the disks. RAC did a nice report and the gits coughed up straight away :)
