Talk about "sleight of hand" isn't this about the same number of jobs in the Public Sector/Civil Service this Government created in the first three years of their administration to get people back to work. Now you get rid of them and hail it as a massive savings. This guy could apply for membership of the Magic Circle.

Any1 hear of the new chairs the government bought for their new office? They bought over three thousand at a price of £1000 each! They say they are the most comfortable chairs but spending 3 million on chairs? Man that p****** me off we pay dam taxes and they buy 1k chairs!

What I'm facinated to know is, what are all these 100,000 people doing if it isn't useful work. Have they been sitting around for the last however many years reading the paper. They must be doing something, and when they go who'll do it instead of them? And assuming no one will do what the 100,000 did, then what won't get done and what effect with that have on the rest of us? And what is this known as?

They are probably doing the same useful work that the extra 500,000 civil servants we have 'acquired' over the past 5 years are doing.  The real question should be 'do we really need the work they are doing done?'

If you don't ask a civil service to micro-manage something then surprisingly they can get away with less people to do their core or 'real' work.

Interestingly, according to the Liberals & Conservatives, a civil service recuitment freeze would cut 100,000 workers over the next 5 years through natural wastage.  More interesting is that fact that Gordie's figures yesterday included 14,000 'permanent' jobs going (included in the 100,000), but did not mention untiul the appendices at the rear that an extra 14,000 part-time (and almost full-time) jobs would arrive in those very same departments!

Even worse is the fact that his 'financial saving' is made up of £5bn direct employment savings and £15bn from indirect savings from 'new IT' application.   Really?  I'll believe that when I see it.  I mean, they did sooo well with the installation of every other big IT system they have commissioned, just look at how well the ATC's systems, the CSA 's systems and the IR's systems - these have all been disasters of biblical proportions.

Finally, for those that think that even the £5bn saving is safe and will go to reducing your taxes, consider this:  Gordie's savings do not translate into savings for you, because he forgot to tell you that in the first Appendix of his 180 page pronnouncement yesterday, his calculations assume that 'Local Finance Expenditure' goes up by a real 8% pa over each of the next 5 years.  When you listen to Gordon Brown talk, try using ear plugs - it helps you concentrate on reading his department's press release which has the _real_ details rather than the garbage that he spouts at the box.

If you can't already guess, 'Local Finance Expenditure' = Council Tax.
Real increases of 8% = Inflation + 8%pa = 10.5% (assuming the MPC's target of 2.5% is reasonable).

Wow, what a day, I am sooooo happy that Gordon explained how well I will be due to his 'fiscal prudence' over the next few years - and all whilst he remains on an increased salary and an expensive final salary pension scheme that we pay for through our taxes but his government makes too expensive for other UK employers to continue to maintain for the benefit of their own employees.

All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others.  Sheesh......

I am as worried by the combined muppet ensembles who are the collective opposition and might be in power after the next general election.

I distrust almost *all* politicians as they generally serve themselves rather than the people who elected them.  They are more concerned with their own pension, their own spans of control, their own departmental budget, their own rise within 'the party' and rarely if ever serve the greater good.

Am I biased?  Yep, probably. :frusty:

Fair point, but consider this - the first thing any truely facist state does is to purge itself of undesirable elements. So you wouldn't actually be around to see if it worked or not.
