MAD_ness

Hello again peeps ....as you guys seemed pretty knowledgable from the Lan do maybe someone can help me with a couple of probs that seem to happen every now and again ?
1.whenever I have been on meathook then quit to come out my desktop reverts to 640 x 480  when its usually set on 1024 x 768 and it only seems to happen with meathook ??
2.On the odd occasion on/off line (it doesn't seem to matter ) I have an error code pop up when I try to start any/all games on the system :
"this programme has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down"
and then lists invalid page faults (different codes for each game !)and I am unable to play any game until I shut down and restart the system -damn annoying !!!!
This one is intermitant and I am currently thinking of fixing it with a large hammer !!!!    please help me keep my MAD_ness to a minimum !!
Any help would be appreciated .......Ta !!

I'm win98 too... when I've been on a server then come back to the main menu I have to quit the game! before I can connect to another server..... plus I cant connect to MH, it just sits there having shown all the clan mod text.

This new ver of HL/CS is a PAIN IN THE TANGO!

I see your problem....

1 - Find Win98 CD, break in half.

2 - Get a copy of Win2K or XP Pro

3 - Install and rejoice :)

First thing, make sure you have the latest drivers for your graphics and sound card. This may fix the crashes you are getting. Without seeing the error codes it is hard to diagnose the cause of the crash but it is 'usually' down to the graphics drivers.

As for the display problem, I used to get this when CS didn't exit correctly. This happens when you choose exit from the menu? Try typing exit in the console and see if this problem re-occurs. Can't test this for you as I'm on XP Pro! But I do know that, unless I type exit in the console, it will lock the system up!

is XP/XP Pro more hardware intensive?  did you loose any game performance when you upgraded to it?

When I swapped from a year old install of ME, yes, there was a vast improvement in performance.

It is more hardware intensive, yes. But I've got a monster of a machine so it doesn't really matter!

The main issue is time. If you leave a win9x os on a system for more than 6 months it eventually ends up going up it's own TANGO in terms of crap installed that a re-install is essential to get your performance back!

With Win2K and XP this is not an issue as resource management is entirely different.

Ness: Anytime m8 :P

Stryker: I got a performance increase when I upgraded from Win ME :D But my old soundcard (Aureal SonicVortex 2) wouldn't work, cause Videologic hadn't updated the drivers in over a year and weren't planning to release any new ones. Apart from that minor setback, i've never had anything but good comments for XP :)
