  • CS in all its myriad incarnations
  • Unreal II - the graphics blew me away when I first played it, particularly those futuristic outdoor levels - awesome on my Voodoo2!
  • Half Life - I never played a game like it before and it was a mould-breaker.
  • Elite - yep, I got there and was *Elite*.  I spent hours playing this game on the BBC Model B micro.
  • American football.  Well nobody said the game had to be on a computer did they?  If you like chess then you'll love american footie - it's exactly the same as chess but with pads :norty:  Go Bears!
There, that's my 2 cents.

Mmm. TL got me thinking and it's worth a separate thread:

What was the the thing in a particular game that really blew you away - either AI, graphics, setting, whatever? One game one thing?

CoD was pants. Utterly horrible tripe. I waited and waited for it to come down in price, grabbed it for £20, and still feel mightily ripped off. It has tiny levels, a very short lifespan (I completed it in a day), and its big selling point of "omg no man faught alone!!" is just an excuse to make up for a lack of excitement by assaulting you with noise. When yu realise it makes absolutely no difference if your squad lives or dies (and given the shoddy AI, dying is much more likely) you see the game for the shallow pretender it really is.

A far better WW2 experience can be found in H&D2, which seems to have been largely ignored by the games buying public, for shame.
