Hmmm, I'm not sure whether or not to throw this in Compost corner
I'll mull it over and come back to it in a while.......

Fairy muff.

I don't believe it's illegal, it's a site promoting the public domain streaming media websites, all public stations such as the Chinese sport channel. The way Sky's contract runs is they are not allowed to broadcast live games in this country, at 3pm on a Saturday.

Other places are, and as long as you aren't showing the streams publicly I don't believe it is an issue. Anyone with a satellite dish can pick these channels up, as can anyone who browses google looking for streaming TV stations.  The site just hangs them together, however I do appreciate the public face of the community and have kept it out of the public forums, I could rephrase and go for PM's if that would suit better?

Your call admin bloke.

Just a quick prod, could you let me know if this sorta thing is unacceptable, given the forum guidelines I'd say yes, but then I'd say that  a lot of the implied piracy and copying suggestions are against policy, as are publishing NSFW links and a lot of my implied innuendo, but then that would stop a lot of the 'fun' that is had here. At DA's expense.

It may well be me, but anything I can't open at work, I wouldn't open in front of my kids.

I can see the reasons why, but perhaps I'm too simple to see the line.  I also don't understand why sites like suprnova can run, it's nothing illegal in supplying the info, it's personal choice using it or not.

Without wishing to argue the toss, could the admins let me know their opinions so I know where to draw the line. I'm sure I can dig up some weak links. like these?

I can fully understand the rules against pron and have been rightly chastised for that in past, I'll hold my hands up, language, again, I have been guilty in the past and accept that one....but links to other sites......point me in the right direction please.

Personally I don't think it's about moral highground, but more about what we cold get done for if the wrong people wander into our site. We can't be seen to be promoting anything illegal or facilitating anyone else doing so. I spend a huge amount of time on intercontinental flights watching 'as yet unreleased in the UK' films so it's a thin line I know.

If the stations aren't illegal and the feeds aren't illegal then I guess there's no problem?

Whatever's gone wrong it's not my fault.

Makes sense young man.  How about if the forum at a site I linked to contained links to other site not so upstanding, where is the line? Can I mention Suprnova? I know, I'm a pain in the ass, but that'll teach you to all be admins ;) (smiley suggesting I find you attractive)

To further the question, if I linked to a site that had say....gratuitious violence...and linked to it from the Charlie section - where I know the all the members listed - would that be ok?

I am genuinely interested n the repercussions of us linking to an illegal operation however, how does the law / hosting company see that.

You'll see I've dragged this off at a tangent, feel free to move it to 'Seriously' but I thought it was better discussed in a private forum.

It's a grey area, but if we link to a site that has illegal content or allow illegal content on the forum, and are made aware of it by a third party, we have to get rid of it. It's extremely unlikely that we would get grief if we were not aware of the post. On the other hand it would be tough to argue we didn't spot a post that says "I'm selling pirated DVD's. PM me for a price list." as we don't get enough posts in a day to make that arguement stick. Dozens as opposed to thousands.

As to sites that we link to that are legal but link to illegal sites it's all getting a bit confusing. If the site's whole purpose was to link to illegal sites and was titled "Links to Illegal Sites" there might be trouble. But if the site was basically legit and had some illegal links buried away somewhere then we would be on firmer ground. TBH it's a bloody minefield and annoying as there's probably nil chance of someone reporting us anyway.

It's for this reason that we sort of said 'Lets not take a chance' and posted the warnings in the appropriate forums.

The end of the day, a forum is a place to freely discuss views and other worldly happenings. If it happens to mention something like a web link that isn't exactly legal or ethical, it does not mean you're liable for dosing  talking about it. I mean you can't get done for spreading the word, or at least the western world preaches free speech even if it's not always exacly that way.
Cheers, Bert
