Life, commision and corporate inbreeding

I'm sure most of you know I'm well balanced and generally am an affable chap. It's come to the for recently however that people in my kind of position are consistently taken advantage of.

I am an engineer, kind of, I can't be bothered to explain exactly what I do. Why, in life, do the doers get walked over, whilst the useless skin tags in the sales/marketing/managering departments get rewarded.

Let's take a look at corporate events. Old Trafford, for example, I believe is majority corporate, as is the rugby, as is the World Cup. Now these aren't people that are fans of the clubs or even in some cases fans of the sports, they are leeches who pray on the corporate mentality of greasing wheels.

Slightly tangentially, why should a salesman get commision on a sale? That's his job right? I can understand a low pay base and OTE based commision, no problem.  However the truth is different, decent pay, big commision, bonus structures, all the corporate jollies you can shake a stick at, yet down in the cellar, the people who make it happen, at cost of social and family life, for no reward other than a monthly paycheck, the grunts get...wait for it....nothing.  So whilst you ensure the sales team get there targets, "earn" that commision, having done all of the hard work, and in a number of cases done the selling, the customer facing, the liasons, the design etc etc, you get....nothing.

Now it sounds bitter and quite frankly is, it's not this job, it's all jobs, or have I been unlucky.  Technical gets nothing, managerial once you pass middle management gets everything. Is it worth sucking it up and doing a job I hate to jump up to that level? No. I like my job, I like what I do, I just want equality across an organisation.  

And now I can breathe again, I'll get back to scraping away at this coalface with my finger nails, just to see if I can get another diamond to give to the boss upstairs.

In my business we have a bonus structure that includes everyone.  It is no doubt not perfect, but it goes a long way to solving the problems outlined above.

I'm glad to hear someone makes a difference TL. I work for an American company, which I suppose concretes the point.

It doesn't help re: the sporting stuff though. How do the true fans stand a chance?

I made the jump from Technical to managerial. Really regret it. Rewards? Yes you get them. Is it worth it for the qualtiy of life you lead? No.

i would be happier as a postman in a small village. Trouble is the pay is pants so life ends up being a compromise;  the "work/life balance".

Don't get me wrong, I agree with your choice, it just sucks that you had to make it.

I've often wondered what society would be like if no matter what job you did the pay was the same? A street sweeper would get the same as a lawyer.

Would be interesting would it not. Wonder what would happen?

Mhhmmzzz, Im my job the architects think of stuff, we have to find out if it works, we work it out, he decides afterall he doesn't like it, thinks of something new and so on and so on. In the end my boss comes to me: Why did you make so much hours on the project, you explain why and in the end the architect says it's your fault and you get fired, the architect doesn't back you up at all.
I know the feeling and it s*cks
