I seem to get very low volume levels from CZ and hl2 etc etc at the moment (massively quieter than, say, winamp...)

is this an issue that anyone has come accross, first time I've played CZ (I recently updated my nvidia drivers, but that wouldn't break anything would it? :S

Check your normal computersettings aswell. When I've had the newest drivers one day, my normal settings were automaticly set up almost nothing. Happend a year ago.

I found when I 1st started playing CZ that voice comms compaired to normal game sounds seemed really quiet no matter how I set it, I'm not sure if I sorted it, or I just got use to it tho, but I have done a reinstall from the steam back up utility since, not sure if that may have helped.

Sound in windows / winamp / mediaplayer is as it was and is behaving normally. voice comms are the same level as the sound effects in CSS/CSCZ, however I had to turn my amplifier up to what is normally ludicrous volume levels the other night to be able to hear. HL2 seems to have become quiet as well...

Only thing I can think of that I did recently was to update my Nvidia drivers, but I figured that shouldn't alter the audigy2's sound output in halflife?

This sounds remarkably similar to a problem I had a little while back. But as you were such a git last night I'm not going to tell you how I fixed it  :narnar:   :narnar:

Oh OK then I will. It was actually in the nvidia nforce sound setup screen thingy where the problem was. Make sure that your pre-mix volume levels are set to the max and your environment settings is 'none', on the main screen check that your wav slider isn't set too low.

I think that was it. It was a while ago and the little grey cells are not as numerous now so I can't remember exactly.
I do exactly what the little voices tell me to.

PC Specs:- Black box with some fans that go whirrr, a few lights, things inside that get warm, headphones, keyboard (a clicky one), mouse (with buttons and no squeak), disks (2-off SSD and HDD) and a monitor of sufficient proportions.

thanks for all the suggestions...however I think this post could probably be moved to the joke forums now that I tracked the problem down...

I noticed that the audio through my headphones was a bit distorted and rather quiet, so I unplugged the 'phones to check out the sound quality through the speaker - suddenly the volume went up by, shall we say, many?, notches. Turns out the volume control in the headphone lead was turned right down. It's back up now

I'm going to go sit in the corner...
