Hi all, got a problem with my new PC which sucks.

Its over heating, you all warned me of it but its taken 6months for it to decide its going to do so.

Anyway, i'm going to buy a new case and a new motherboard, before everything gets fried, but can people perhaps tell me what the best motherboard is to get for an AMD 64 3400+ Socket 754 ???

Cheers

Ok,here is my choice: Abit KV8-Pro 3rd eye

Standard cooler(decked) runs 3400 @ 2.6 with a temp @42-44 under 100 % load

Waiting to choose a decent cooler before I start any serious OC :D

So far,super stable,on 24/7 @100% load,no problems.Nice solid board imho. ;)

Maybe i could get some more help on this whole matter if i perhaps describe things a bit better and in more detail.

Basically, i have a nice ShuttleX Form Factor PC... its all been a bit of a push with the power as it is running on a 240W... but their testing says it runs ok. which is has granted... but now i've got issues and dont want to push it and ruin anything.

I have the Geforce 6800XT, SATA 200GB HDD, and  DVD-RW... the main reason i got this system was 2 things:
1 - looks neat, tidy and cool all at same time, small and sleak.
2 - quite (apparantly) it is quite quiet.

So these 2 things is what i'm looking for in my new case, but i need and want it to be better on the power and cooling side, as my chip runs at 73 Degrees C atm, thats when it doesn't stay cooler and then crash... so i need to sort this out before everything/anything else blows.

My question is if anyone knows where i should be looking or of any already known cases with good enough cooling system and power that is still quiet and looks good? :D

Also, changing motherboards i know has a nasty effect on XP... so i ask 2 questions to this one...:
1 - Is there a way around adding a new Motherboard and not messing everything up and not needing to reformat?
2 - if not, can you run an IDE HDD and a SATA HDD at same time? IE, add a small IDE HDD for windows and then add the SATA as a secondary and have all my files still available...?

Cheers peeps :)

IDE and sata can be used at the same time.Xp usually becomes flakey after a motherbaord change, the repair facility on xp is more of a "sort of get it working" and will cause problems most of the time.Burn an image if you want to save all your data and do a format/re-install. :)

Small compact cases are always going to be below par in the cooling department useing fans.

Have a look here for info on how to swap a MB in XP and have a stable result.

Works for me :)

Asus K8N-E Deluxe nForce3 (Socket 754)
This Athlon 64, nForce 3 motherboard distinguished itself from other solutions of the same platform by adopting the best features to date. Just name it: 8-channel audio, 6 Serial ATA, intelligent features for BIOS and audio setup, and a full lineup of unique and innovative designs.

- 3 x 184pin DDR-SDRAM ports
- 5 x PCI slots
- 1 x AGP (4x/8x) slot
- 6 x Serial ATA ports
- Dual RAID
- 8 x USB 2.0 ports
- 2 x IEEE1394 Firewire ports
- Gigabit LAN
- 8 Channel Audio
- Nivida nForce3 250GB Chipset

Is what I have just got for a build and has had some pretty good write ups whilst the Abit below was a close second choice. I chose the Asus in the end because it gave me more features that I wanted.

Abit KV8-MAX3 (Socket 754) Motherboard

The KV8-MAX3 is equipped with features never even conceived for a desktop motherboard. For users who require MAXimum security and storage, the ABIT MAX3 features 6 channel serial ATA RAID with the Silicon Image 4-port serial ATA RAID controller plus native 2 channel support, as well as ABIT's latest ABIT Engineeredâ,,¢ feature: Secure IDEâ,,¢. But what is most exciting about MAX3 is that it features the most advanced cooling technology ever seen before on a motherboard - OTES.

- OTES Cooling system
- Abits Hardware Guru (A Second Processor) for overclocking, hardware monitoring and e-service features
- Silicon Image 4 port serial ATA RAID Controller
- 800MHz FSB Support
- DDR400
- Gigabit LAN
- S/PDIF In/Out
- Onboard 6 Channel Audio
- 4 x USB2.0 Ports
- 2 x Firewire IEEE1394 Ports

Or the overclockers choice is normally the MSI K8N Neo Platinum nForce3 250 (Socket 754)  <_<

I already have the chip... which is a 754.

Does anyone have any suggestions for perhaps a new CPU fan? or shall i just use the one that comes with ths chip?

What WATT power supply? 550?
