Thulsa Doom

DoD was ok, need a while to grow used to weaponry etc

OldBloke

I really enjoyed it. My lack of map layout knowledge was a problem but it didn't detract from the fun. I can see how this could get very tactical indeed. Sadako would have a field day on this mod :)

If you like this OB I think you'll LURV Red Orchestra :D

I was once a big DoD fan, but I tend to find some maps very dull. And when you don't play it often certain levels can be extremely confusing!!!

Then again, it's a nice break from the normal CS :)

I must admit that after dipping my toe into the mysterious DoD pond last week, I wasn't much looking forward to playing tonight.

for about half an hour I was hoping someone would say "right I'm off to MH" coz I would've been gone like a shot....

but eventually I got the hang of it (sort of) and enjoyed the rest of the evening...shame it ended so early. :(

maybe at the Lan some kind person will tweak me settings & give me some tips etc. coz it still looks clunky on me screen.

I like the sniper rifles from the beach in the normandy landing map....I NEVER touch a snipey in cs....even a free one

I'm deffo up for this 1 again :D

Great fun. I didn't enjoy the last map we played as much as the others - a bunch of us spent half our time wondering where on earth the opposition was, while they picked us of with sniper rifles ;-)

That notwithstanding, the other maps were pretty good fun, and I'd be up for this again.  :D   Jolly good idea, this DOD night.

I did enjoy it. apart from the over use of the heavy machine gun on one map. what we be nice, is to have a 5 min map walkthrough at the beginning of each map. as it took me a while to get my bearings.

I really enjoyed last night Gents - top stuff!!

One thing I think we need on the server in the future are class limits.  I.e. only allow one sniper/MG per team.

For example: Playing as the Allies on dod_charlie (the Normandy beach map), pretty much all the team were snipers at one point.  Charlie is a map where you really need to grab satchel charges and assault en masse, with a lone sniper hanging back to counter-snipe and pick off any MGs in the bunkers.

I wouldn't bring the limits in just yet, as at the moment everyone's just experimenting with the different classes and still finding their feet.  If we decide to persevere with DoD (and I hope we do), once we proceed to get more tactical, that's when the limits should be brought in.

And ban rocket launchers :)

I agree, great fun. One small point though, I found it quite intensive in that there is no break when you die. OK, 5-6 seconds, but the action, and consequently, the concentration levels were high all the time. That's the reason I bowed out so soon.

Respawn delay can be altered on the server. Having a slightly longer respawn time is a good idea as it reduces the tendency for people to show too much bravado and makes them more cautious (bit more like real life).

As we play it more and get a better feel for which maps suit us I'm sure that the experience will become ever better.

Anybody remember dod_omaha? God that map was hard as allies but I loved it because it was difficult and on the odd occasion that you did win as allies you felt reeeeal goood :)

The servers I used to play dod on typically limited the class numbers and the rocket launcher was typically banned, although it's not a very fun class to be anyway imho

I think the class limits used to depend on the number of people on a server. When there were more people on the server you could accasionally have more mg's and snipers on a team. I think the rest of the classes were also limited, and everyone else had to play the grunts

The beach maps are fun for sniping, but for the allies to have a chance of winning they have to be breaching the walls. The whole team simply lying in the shallows with sniper rifles won't win the map, although it might get your frags up a few notches. Personally I actually find some of the non-scoped grunt rifles (particularly the axis ones!) to be incredibly good for sniping anyway and get far more kills with that than with the snipers. I have to confess I do love the MG in a good position though

Bring on Caen - that was a great map

Can this be done on a map by map basis?

I ask because you need the bazookas to destroy objectives (the tanks on dod_jagd) for instance, and they're also useful for opening up alternate routes on the map (dod_caen has loads of these, although they can also be opened with satchel charges).

Bazookas used to be laying around like the satchel charges, and you could drop your primary weapon to pick one up.  They became a playable class in DoD 1.3.  As an anti-personnel weapon, they're pretty bad - but always funny when you do manage to get someone to explode with them.

The official manual is here if anyone wants to take a closer look.

DuVeL

Question, if you take the radar on CounterStrike and the mapthingy on DoD, on CS the radar is a bit easier. Is it possible to use the DoDradar as the CS 1? With this I mean facing the direction and so and not the complete map to turnaround the arrow but the arrow turning and the map changing. I hope you understand what I mean.

Aye - you cannae unwrap and eat a Rolo in 5 seconds, I discovered :(

I had great fun playing DoD there. It's been so long since I played it seriously that there have been a great many map changes since, and it was nice to play with other people who didn't know the maps so well so I didn't get trampled by the more experienced people. I do think however that instead of banning rocket launchers (I mean seriously - they're not all that useful as anti-infantry anyway) we should just go ahead and ban Frenzy ;)

As far as the beach maps go, I remember back in the betas of DoD the servers I played on just tended to remove the beach maps from the rotation, as they were very unpopular. That might be different now, but from what I have seen they're still just as bad.

Also, I really can't get used to the fact you can pick up dropped weapons now - it seems grossly unfair, though I can't really come up with a good reason why.

@Duv - there are just three map modes: 1) small thing in the top-right corner, 2) full-screen view of whole map, 3) no map. They can be toggled with the M key.

Oh, and one final tip: turn the autohelp off when you get a hang of the basics - that bloomin' dog annoys the pants off you after a while ("_ah 0" in console)

When's the next DoD night? :D
