is this likely to be software or (gulp) hardware? happened twice now, not certain if the numbers were the same but the error read the same way...

heat ... videocard or system ram you reckon? Sisoft doesn't read my motherboard temperatures correctly (at least I hope it's not at 200-300 deg C  )

Mine does it everytime I Alt-Tab out of CS:S.  Clicking on the icon in the taskbar to return results in a memory error box first, then the terminate app box shown in your piccy.

Software I reckon.  Specifically something Source.  I've done nowt to my rig's hardware in a while now, and it runs everything else as sweet as a nut.

same here, although I guess I might have turned the cpu fan speed down, and I did rip the sticker off the gfx card fan after it started to peel off and make funny noises (tearing the sticker off seems to have helped (and no other intensive gfx causes the memory fault (yet) I'm going to assume it's source, and in fact it may have been inferno last time the error happened! hmmm, I will have to play more and see...

There's your problem right there mate.  Instantly lost yourself 100 MIPS by ripping your 'go-faster' sticker off.  ;)
