My dad recently purchased a netgear DG834 (I advised his to get that one or the linksys equivalent...) to replace his ISP-supplied usb modem so that he'd have better protection frmo the net (got hit by some serious trojans and viruses within 15 minutes of hooking up his broadband and the resulting mess took a few weeks and some £ to sort out (especially as I can't just pop over and try fix it myself very often)

old modem: USB ISP-supplied (will find out what model it is if needed...)
new modem: netgear DG834 (firmware is latest version)
ISP: BT broadband

Issue: Connection drops and reconnects continuously in a 1.5 minute cycle most times he is connected to the internet. (Very) Occasionally he gets a continuous connection for an hour or so, but mostly he's getting this constant dropping...
QuoteConnection pattern.... *#!
At the moment it is cycling through Orange/ green fast flashing/green erratic flashing/green static/off/orange/etc. Takes about 1.5 minutes per cycle. Cycle is consistant, and identical to previous times.
Yesterday at same time it was a consistant connection, no probs. Green flashed when busy, otherwise fairly static, occasiona twitch. Earlier attempt had given me the cyclical version.... Grrrrrrr.

My guess is either a dodgy modem (am going to try take my DG834G up this weekend) or the ISP/phoneline is causing a problem...

Any ideas?

Unless your dad was experienceing the same problems with his connection before I would imagine this is a HW issue. However, I would try changing the microfilters first (you might have a spare one?).

I have the G version as well and was getting reboots regularly. After updating the firmware to the latest Beta release (as advised by Netgear support) it has been absolutely stable with no reboots or disconnects.

I will have a go with the beta firmware (my one at home is running on older firmware and has very few problems other than the odd reboot being required - it practically never drops connection)

I tried changing the microfilter to the one supplied with the netgear router to no avail. If I manage to take mine up I'll nab my own filter too for testing, depends if housemates can cope without internet for 2-3 days!

Mine does the same with hourly(ish) drops. Only since I've been "upgraded" to 2 meg though.

Same hardware, latest major code release, never had issues until the upgrade, was up 24/7

If BT bless em have been upgrading your local exchange( You getting a free speed regrade) your line might not be able to cope with the new speed. Check its still the same speed as signed up for, if not they might have turned you up too far and needs throttled back a bit.
