I have now bought this - I finally got it working AFTER having to upgrade my wireless network, router, NIC Cards etc (sheesh)...

I managed to play a few rounds and have a coupla questions....

1. Audio - I gather from Ron's thread that comms only work if you're assigned to a squad. There's no way to talk to all your teamies unless you're the commander.

2. If I'm asked to join a squad I say yes and then I may be given a mission - where do I find out what the mission is ?? Someone asked me to join a squad and complete an objective but I couldn't see what hte objective was?

3. Reloading - where do I get to reload my ammunition? I know the supplies are less plentiful than in DC etc, but I have yet to find any ammo resupply post.

4. I treid searching for Deadmen server last night but couldn't find it - If people are playing tonight can you please let me know where so at least I can be killed by some friendly faces :)

Thanks

2) should show up on the minimap as an orangy sword or a purple shield or something. Basically go here and capture/defend something.

3) support infantry carry ammo and the commander can drop supply crates so you have to request it (planes/choppers rearm over runways/carriers/helipads)

4) put "dead men" (without the ") into the ingame server browser. should pop up

I've had a stab at answering Question 1 here.  Let me know if it's not clear ;)

2. the commander uses his map to pinpoint enemies, direct attacks/defence etc. the squad leader gets a message about a new order, and if he can accept it he clicks page up.
an icon appears on your map telling you where to attack/defend etc....you can press page up to tell him you accept.
the icons i have seen are:

orange sword for attack here
purple sheild for defend here

if you see the enemy, hold them in your xhairs while pressing q, then left click to send spotted whatever message to all your team and an icon breifly appears on all maps.

if you have to hide...you can send a vague spotted message, or if you want to be precise, press q, right click then choose tank/heli/infantry etc from the drop down list that appears.

4. in the server screen, type dead into the search for server box, hit enter and choose dead men walking server note: you may have to search a few times to find it as it  doesn't always come up with a complete list. you can also see who is on the server before you join.

otherwise, type 82.197.65.246 into the search ip box

Additionaly if a Support guy is riding in a vehicle, a resupply icon (bullets, looks like three horizontal lines) appears over his vehicle.  The guy projects a resupply 'aura'.  So if you stand next to, or ride in, his vehicle you get more ammo.

Same goes for when a Medic rides in a vehicle (red cross icon - will heal when you stand nearby), or an Engineer (spanner icon - will repair your vehicle when you park nearby).

Incidentally, as an aside, the coolest thing I've found about the Engineer class is their trusty do-it-all™ spanner will also defuse mines and C4 as well as repair busted stuff .

annoying thing about being the engineer I found was that I don't seem to fix my own vehicle with my "aura"   The bridge repairing can be quite amusing as the enemy watch you drive right over the busted planks

y'know, having an apc (or suimilar) supply vehicle with an engineer, support and a medic would be pretty handy! Especially on the infantry dominated maps!

This may account for some of why my comms don;t appear to work.  I take it from this statement that even though I join a team, then select a squad and join that, I need to wait for the Commander to accept/invite me into the squad?  I have not ever had to say Yes or No to join a squad, I just select one when I join - or is that bad?  I have however been given a mission ONCE in all my times on the servers (yes, I have been trying to practice on other servers before embarassing myself on the dMw one).

To join a squad you do not need Commander permission.
You will only get a mission if the Commander assigns one to your squad and it is accepted by your squad leader. Then you will get a symbol appearring on your HUD to indicate the location.
You only get the option to accept or decline your application for Commander, you apply, get accepted and then asked whether you actually want to be a commander.
Hope this helps.

THanks guys - that's cleared up some of my queries.

Heh ditto TL

I've had a few practive games and some random servers just ot get the hang of it - I used to play BF1942 and Desert Combat so it's quite similar.

THe comms thing is a tricky one - as is the squad commander  thing.

One of the servers I played on was using teamspeak - so I guess that may be an avenue for us to try as we all like to communicate in the way we can in CS.

PEN

I'm going to be playing a lot tonight so will hopefully cya on the DMW server.

No that's right.  An Engineer/Support guy will not repair/rearm their own vehicle.  Which is why it makes sense to keep a couple of Engineers in a tank and an APC and drive them in convoy.  Stick the tank up front as it can take the most damage, and both Engies will repair each others vehicle provided they're close enough together.  The choppas can also come down and hover over the top of the convoy and get repaired away from their pads.

This has to be the most unrealistic bit about BF2...

It should take a while to mend the bridge (at least 30 secs)...it takes a bit to mend your own vehicle, so this instant bridge repair is a joke.

what's the point in destroying it if the enemy can just roll over it?

Agreed.  I'd go further in suggesting it should have to be that the Engineer has to leave the protection of his vehicle when fixing a bridge.  After all, the Spec Ops guy has had to take a risk by going out in the open to plant the C4.

The aura effect thing that all 3 classes has is almost too powerful :) but then again you could consider it part of the tactics. I agree that the bridge fixing time should be longer! let's just hope they don't introduce automatic mine&c4-defusal :)

To gain the best use from all the classes you really have to act as a team. Last night i was in a really cool squad i lost count of how many times i was revived by the medic. Once people get used to moving as a team the game really starts to pick up. I think we had a fire fight lasting about 10 minutes at one base.

I took great pleasure in taking out most of there apc's with my mines mmmwwhaaa ha ha ha
