Wheel of Time is worth sticking with (it does get better).

Less long-winded but much more enthralling, the "Empire" Series by Raymond E. Feist and Janny Wurts.

If you like them, try "Magician" by Raymond E Feist and "Mistwraith" by Janny Wurts.

Less fantasy but a damn good read, "The Dresden Files" series by Jim Butcher.

The "Darwath" trilogy by Barbara Hambley

Found the Sword of Truth a bit pedestrian.

My all time favourite, "The Godwhale" by T. J. Bass - sadly out of print, but worth hunting for. I am scanning my copy to put an .epub copy together for myself. The cover art is by Jim Burns and is featured in his book "Lightship".

Wheel of Time gets my vote, just finished the 13th book, last one is due out next year. There are some slow reads in there but it's definitely worth sticking with.

Noticed OB mention Peter F Hamilton, I'm reading "The Reality Dysfunction" on the kindle and its good. Not read any of his stuff before.

Currently re-reading The Wheel of Time series in preparation for the final book coming out in November.

As oldie said a fair few years ago some of the books in the series are a little dull and can drag, get past these and the series is worth it.

Also working through the series. Sadly i don't seem to get much time to read so only on book Two but liking it a lot

Whatever's gone wrong it's not my fault.

Did you try Gemmell or Eddings?

If you'd like, I'll being them some of them up to the LAN or you can grab them next time you're at the office.

If you like the heroic fantasy genre then they're a pretty good read.

Sadly, though, they'll be paperback !

smilodon

eh? what? you mean a thing with pages and paper and stuff ???? How does that work then?

I think with a combination of another eleven and a half paperbacks plus all my photo related reads it will be a long time before I'm back in the market for books, but thanks for the offer. Once the wheel of Time is done I'll check those out, cheers.

When i was younger i loved to read the Dragonlance Series by Tracy Hicks and Margaret Weiss. Its a Role Playing game story inspired by a Dungeons and Dragons game and has since evolved unto a number of books and role playing items. It first book is from 1984, but much like the Lords of The Rings (no comparions) its a story that still holds today.

The first 3 books are called the Chronicles and the next 3 are called the Legends and those 6 books are telling the story of band of characters who will experience a lot of things and take some tough choices along the way. I recommend all reading these books if you like fantasy stories.
