Overclocking or new rig?

So bf3 has come out and my rig has begun to struggle.

I am thinking of over-clocking it but for the time and effort not sure whether its worth doing it.

Specs are below:

q6600 SLACR (go stepping variant)
XFX 680i SLI motherboard
Gainward 580 gtx
ddr 2 pc 6400 8gb quad set
corsair HX850w psu
Tuniq tower 120 cpu cooler
Range of hdd's

Anyone about to help with overclocking one night on TS?

Tried a few settings but pc will either get into windows and restart or not even get to the windows screen before restarting.

Define struggle?
Game crashes after 4 maps? Slight lag?
DirectX error?

Othertwise game on untill the next patch. The game just got out m8.

Over-clock it and be done with it!

It should push easily to well over 3.2 ghz if you have a decent cooler. Then it will fly.

i still have the same processor and my 1st step was to go to a 460gt, you beat that. My next step probably after xmas is to overclock the fecker as i have a water cooled system. For a small outlay you could get a new water cooler and then overclock it and save for next year

I got 3.33Ghz out of that processor. I've upgraded to a 570 and a 4.6Ghz i7. I'd suggest overclocking it but start saving for a new CPU,Ram and Mobo because with the graphics card you've got everyday it's paired with old hardware feels to me like wasted potential.

Looking at that overclock guide, i've got a Q9550 on an Abit IP35 Pro XE board, so I could probably O/C mine a bit as well but I have no real idea of which voltages to up and whatnot. I could probably have a bit of a guess from looking at what's in my BIOS and the voltages they alter in that guide, but what are the chances of me utterly toasting my CPU or mobo if I fiddle with voltages? I will be monitoring temps and seeing if it boots and runs stuff stably of course.

Google it. Overclockers.co.uk forum have a guide telling you exactly what to do if I remember rightly, but there will probably be guides somewhere for your exact processor. You don't want to put your voltage up much as it shortens the life of the processor and leads to heating. You want to put it up a little though as it lets you get more performance out of it. Other people will have posted their results to give you ballpark figures. Always test your OC afterwards for stability with a temperature monitor and a stress test to run your PC at 100% load overnight. If it goes above 80C or crashes the overclock isn't working.

Before you do anything check that you have a good cooler on and good thermal paste. There is no point trying to overclock and using a stock cooler with budget thermal paste. It's worth spending £30 to do a better job. You'll see the difference in the final speed you manage.

I did a forum search on overclockers found a general guide but nothing relevant to my exact spec.

Any thoughts?

Assuming all the voltages are set correctly and you still got that result then you just need to downclock a bit until you find your own max stable overclock.  It's different for every rig and is highly dependent on the individual components in the system.

Try somewhere between stock speeds and the values they tried. The person who did that overclock might have had better ram. Memory timings are important when it comes to overclocking. Just because they can get a speed one way doesn't mean your system will work with the same settings. It's trial and error.

A Q6600 with a 580 GTX should run BF3 perfectly fine IMO. I ran the beta with a 4870x2 card and when I had by Q6600 I got 3.4 stable out of it with a £12 Arctic Cooling air fan and heat sink. I'd overclock up to 3Hz and if that doesn't run stable remove and clean up your cooler and reapply some fresh solution. Then step it up a bit at a time not being to heavy on the voltages. My experience is when there are many people reaching 3Ghz with a cpu with ease, they are not far above stock voltage, it's the moderate overclock that results in needing more power to the cpu and ram. I reported the results of my Q6600 OC several years ago on the forums, with luck I put the voltage if you want to search around.
